DIY bumper repair. Some simple recommendations

It would seem, why do we need to repair the bumper, and even more so give money for it, if this does not in any way affect the ride itself. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, bumpers are needed to protect the car in an accident. Secondly, the bumper is the appearance of the car, which should not be neglected. And thirdly, in the event of a subsequent sale, a broken bumper will not only significantly lower the price, but will also tell the potential buyer how the previous owner took care of this car and is most likely scared away from itself.

On old cars, metal bumpers are installed. Do-it- yourself bumper repair in this case is quite laborious and requires the observance of special repair techniques. Otherwise, it will simply rust. If the damage to the bumper is strong, then it is simply replaced.

In modern cars, in the vast majority of cases, plastic bumpers are installed. Plastic provides a significant reduction in the weight of the car, and also, due to this, replacing a damaged bumper with a new one is not a problem. Do-it-yourself bumper repair, in this case, is greatly facilitated. Small scratches, holes and minor dents lend themselves to self-repair, just buy a special repair kit for this. To repair more serious damage, it is better to contact the workshop. And in those cases when there are many cracks, holes and deep dents on the bumper, it is more advisable to replace it with a new one, saving a lot of effort, time and nerves.

DIY plastic bumper repair. Getting rid of scratches

First of all, it is necessary to sand all scratches with a rough emery cloth. Sanding should be until the surface is smooth. The main thing in this business is not to overdo it, since the plastic is quite soft.

After sanding, apply the primer spray in place of scratches in two layers. Each coat should dry for about thirty minutes. Do-it-yourself bumper repair requires some skill, but if it does appear, small cracks and scratches will no longer scare car owners. The painted place must be sanded with fine-grained sandpaper, then wiped with a damp cloth. It remains only to apply three or four layers of paint (each layer should dry for thirty minutes), after which put on the same place a transparent paint in two layers. The paint should dry during the day.

DIY bumper repair. Getting rid of dents, chips and cracks

The first thing you need in this business is liquid plastic, which corresponds to the plastic of the bumper. The bumper itself must be removed and its surface cleaned with a plastic care product. The place of damage is wiped with sandpaper, and with the help of a drill a V-shaped groove is made. Now you need to stick masking tape, and a mixture of glue and thickener is applied on top of it. After the masking tape is removed, the surface of the bumper is again sanded and cleaned, liquid plastic is applied here. It remains only to wait until the plastic hardens and grind it. The final stage is the painting of the bumper, which is carried out in several stages. It is necessary to strictly follow the painting technique, otherwise the paint will very quickly lose its appearance.

Following these instructions, repairing a plastic bumper will not cause much difficulty and hassle. In addition, if everything is done correctly, the work done will bring a lot of positive emotions, because when you do something with your own hands, you look at it a little differently than the thing repaired by a stranger, especially taking the money for it. But it should be remembered that with severe damage on your own you can not do and you can only aggravate the situation.
