Ethernet technology and its development

Ethernet technology is the most common for organizing local area networks. Today their number exceeds five million. If we talk about computers that are equipped with network cards that work on Ethernet technology, then there are significantly more of them.

What does this concept mean in the narrow sense? This is a network standard that was based on the Internet Network experimental network. It was developed by Xerox, it was implemented in the seventy-fifth year of the last century. Although this method was tested much earlier in the radio network of one University of Hawaii. This happened in the second half of the sixties of the twentieth century. Then all sorts of random access methods to the common radio environment were used. This method was then called Aloha.

Ethernet technology has changed in the eighties of the twentieth century. Dec, Intel and Xerox have jointly created and published Ethernet 2 for the network. It was based on coaxial cable, which was the latest version of this proprietary Ethernet technology standard. That is why this version is called Ethernet DIX or 2.

Based on this standard, another was developed, which is called IEEE 802.3. It has a lot in common with its predecessor, but this Ethernet technology still has some differences. While the MAC and LLC levels are different in the new version, his older brother had both of these levels combined into one channel. The DIX version defines a configuration verification protocol that is missing from the new version. And the frame format is slightly different, however, the maximum and minimum frame sizes for both standards are the same.

IEEE Ethernet technology is often called 802.3, while DIX is simply referred to as Ethernet, without any notation. This is done in order to distinguish the new standard from the previous one. Depending on what type of physical environment is used, IEEE 802.3 Ethernet technology provides for various variations (10 Base-5 along with 10 Base-2, also 10Base-T with 10Base-FL and, finally, 10Base-FB).

In the ninety-fifth year of the twentieth century, a standard called Fast Ethernet was adopted . It is fair to say that in many ways it is not independent. This is confirmed by the fact that its simple description is in addition to the basic 802.3 standard - the 802.3i section. Similarly, in 1998 a new one was adopted - Gigabit Ethernet, which is described in another section of 802.3z of this main document.

To send and receive binary information on the cord for all types at the physical level, Ethernet technology, which provides a bandwidth of ten megabits per second, uses the Manchester code. Absolutely all Ethernet standards, together with the last two, use the identical method to separate the medium when transmitting data. It is called CSMA / CD.

We went over the entire history of this technology. The other day she turned forty years old. Despite this, she is still popular. Today, of course, new and more convenient technologies appear, but most likely, Ethernet technology will continue to operate our networks for many, many years, as it is reliable, practical, and has been used safely for many decades.
