Painting the ceiling with water-based paint

Despite the fashionable and modern methods of finishing ceilings, such as suspended, suspended, rack, various combined designs, traditional and classic ceiling, painted with paint or whitewashed lime, is still one of the most common. Painting the ceiling with water-based paint gives good results. Firstly, such a coating is very environmentally friendly, secondly, it doesn’t “eat up” the already small height of our apartments, thirdly, on a well-leveled painted surface you can create any kind of painting, including screen painting, finally, the ceiling can be painted with several colors and visually give it volume, an unusual shape, make it completely modern and creative.

Aqueous emulsion ink firmly “settled” in the construction market, displacing traditional whitewash, as it has an even dense structure, perfectly fits, its snow-white color and high hiding power create just the perfect coating.

How to paint the ceiling with water-based paint? This work does not require special knowledge and skills; painting itself is simple. The main difficulty lies in the preliminary preparation of the surface. It must be perfectly smooth before painting, without cracks, potholes and sag. Any defects after painting will be even more noticeable.

Finishing the ceiling is done in the first place, as this process is associated with a lot of splashes and drips. Before work, the furniture is taken out, or carefully covered with a film, the same applies to the floor (if its finish is not provided), as well as window and door structures.

Preparation of the ceiling surface begins with the removal of the old coating. If the ceiling was painted with water-based paint and you just need to update it, then the old paint layer (if it is crackless and holds well) should not be removed. The surface needs only to be washed with water with the addition of a spoonful of soda, dried and painted. Bleached or enameled surfaces are completely cleaned of the old coating, all cracks are embroidered, cleaned of dust and putty. Large cracks and tile joints are glued with a sickle or construction bandage. After that, the ceiling is covered with a layer of putty, the thickness of which should be no more than one or two millimeters. Before applying putty, the surface is primed. If one leveling layer is not enough, after thoroughly drying the first and applying the primer, one more is applied. Finish the work by grinding the surface with fine-grained sandpaper.

Applying paint to the leveling compound, which has good absorbency, significantly increases its consumption. To reduce the required amount of paint, as well as increase its adhesion to the putty layer, a primer will help, which must be applied before painting and dried well.

Painting the ceiling with water-based paint starts from the corners. With a wide brush, first paint over the entire surface around the perimeter. The central part is better to be painted with a roller with a medium pile, worn on a long stick. You should discard the foam sponge, it absorbs too much paint, so it is impossible to control the consumption of material. The main ceiling begins to be painted from the window, perpendicular to the sun's rays, gradually moving deeper into the room. To avoid streaks, painting the ceiling with water-based paint is done in W-shaped movements. At the end of the work, an almost dry roller is passed along the ceiling to grind possible smudges, distribute the layer more evenly and remove excess paint. The use of a special paint container with a corrugated surface, which well removes its excess from the roller and evenly distributes along the pile surface, will help to avoid unwanted smudges and uneven layers.

After application of the first layer and its complete drying, a second one must be applied. The ceiling is painted with water-based paint for the second time in parallel with the light flux. It is better to take a new roller for work, and thoroughly clean the container from paint before using it a second time. So, the instruction on how to paint the ceiling with water-based paint is simple, in addition, by adding color pigment to the main white paint composition, you can get interesting color schemes.
