Not everyone knows, but Angelina is a rather rare and very beautiful Orthodox Russian name of Greek origin, which translates as “messenger” or “messenger”.
But, before answering the question of what day Angela Angela is celebrated on what date, we plunge into the history of the saint with this name and find out what it became famous for. That was the name of the Serbian princess, who was married to a blind woman and spent a lot of time in exile.
Rev. Angelina Serbian (Brankovich)
Before we find out when Angelina’s Orthodox birthday is celebrated, we’ll find out some of the details of Angelina Serbian’s life. Her last name is Brankovich. She belonged to the ancient family of the rulers of Montenegro, which overnight fell under the rule of the Turks.
A little time will pass after the famous Battle of Kosovo in 1389, when the 25,000th army of Serbs, together with their allies, will be defeated by the 40,000th army of the Turks.
The name day of Angelina is a very important date, many holy names and events are connected with her name, because she survived her husband and two sons, all of them were counted as saints.
St. Stephen the Blind
Her husband was the last Serbian ruler Stefan the Blind, with whom she married in 1461. He was described as a worthy and wise man who knew the Bible well. He was not blind from birth, this was preceded by a whole event.
When his sister Maru got into the harem to the Turkish Sultan Murad II, Stefan, along with his older brother, went after her to Turkey. There they were suspected of being plotted and blinded.
Mara
Another very amazing story is connected with Mara, she - the Queen of Serbia - became the only woman who entered the holy mountain Athos. It was she who came there in order to convey the shrines that were captured by the Turks in Constantinople.
There is such a legend that the Queen of Heaven herself and the patroness of the monastic Athos monastery warned her not to enter the holy land. Mara obeyed and transmitted all the gifts through noble people, and then sailed away.
Exile
However, let us return to Serbia again, their ruler Stefan the Blind was in power for a short time. He was slandered very soon, and he was forced to flee from the wrath of his compatriots. Together with his family, he first went to Albania, then to Italy, where he lived for 10 years. Angelina was always with him, during this time she gave birth to three children: sons Juraj and Jovan and daughter Maru.
In 1476, after his death, Stefan did not leave any will, but began to ask for support for his wife Angelina and children from the population of the Sicilian city of Ragusa, where they then lived.
In 1486, the Hungarian ruler managed to resettle Angelina in Hungary in the village of Kupinovo, where she was able to transport her husband’s coffin. According to legend, when the husband’s coffin was carried to the temple, a hunchbacked man was healed . The relics of Stephen the Blind appeared imperishable, and his name became holy.
The fate of the sons
The eldest son of Angelina Juraj first ruled the Hungarian Serbs and was even married to Isabella - Italian and a relative of the Hungarian queen Beatrice, but then the marriage broke up on religious grounds. In 1497, Juraj was tonsured a monk with the name Maxim.
Then the power passed to his younger brother Jovan, but he soon died (in 1502). He did not have heirs, since his wife Elena Yakshich (an ancestral relative of the Russian Tsar Vasily III) gave birth to him only daughters. He, too, was counted among the saints.
After the death of Jovan, Angelina, together with Maxim, moved to Wallachia (now these are Romanian lands). They took with them the holy relics of Stephen and Jovan.
Maxim wisely managed the Church of Wallachia and was able to reconcile the warring princes of Wallachia and Moldova, as well as create the first printing house.
Later, he will receive the rank of Metropolitan of Belgrade-Sremsky and create the famous monastery monastery of Krushedol, where he will be buried in 1516.
Birthday of Angelina
Now, finally, we come to the most important thing. However, a little more information in order to give a complete answer to the question of when the birthday of Angelina.
After the death of her second son, Angelina distributed everything she had to the beggars and also took monastic tonsure, and at the end of her life she became the abbess of the monastery near Krushedol. She was engaged in the construction of churches and charity and always asked for help for the cloisters from the Russian Tsar Vasily III, who never refused her. In 1520, she peacefully departed to the Lord. The relics of her entire holy family were laid in her monastery.
But in 1716, the Turks burned this monastery and the relics were destroyed. However, some units remained, and they are now stored in the restored monastery of Krushedol (Serbia).
In Orthodox Saints, Angelina's name day is celebrated on July 14 and December 23.
