Story
Russian State Pedagogical University named after Herzen was originally called the St. Petersburg Educational Home, which was founded in 1797. Then the Empress Maria Fedorovna took the Educational Home under her wing, who did everything to make the issue of providing orphans in Russia a weighty one. In the institution, orphans not only fed and gave them shelter over their heads, but also trained. It was in the walls of the Orphanage that the foundation for female teacher education in Russia was laid. Separate classes were created for training girls as governesses, teachers, mentors, etc. In 1837, the institution became an Orphanage, and in 1855 it received the name of Emperor Nicholas I.
By 1903, the Higher Women's Pedagogical Institute was established, which graduated teachers for high schools. He became the first state university in Russia for women.

The Faculty of Biology is considered to be one of the oldest at the university. It was organized as a separate structural unit in 1920. Until 1944, it was called the faculty of natural sciences.
