Potatoes with onions and herring - variations of a simple dish

From this delicious salted fish, you can cook a lot of different dishes, including the simplest, so to speak, nationwide. One of these dishes - potatoes with onions and herring - probably the most favorite and most popular dish in the USSR, and then in the post-Soviet space. You can call it both appetizer and salad, in addition, it is very satisfying, and it is prepared very simply. And it disappears from the plates instantly, whether it is a festive or everyday table.

Potato with onion and herring: the easiest recipe

So, all we need is: a pound of potatoes, a pair of onions and a herring - one large or two small sizes. In addition, you can use fresh dill, parsley, green onions - as a decoration for the dish. Also, potatoes with onions and herring will require a drop of vegetable oil (it is better to take not refined, but smelling). Here, in fact, all the ingredients for this super-simple dish.

How to cook

  1. Cook the potatoes directly in their uniforms until ready, after washing it thoroughly. For those who do not understand the “refinement”, you can first clean and then cook. We pour boiling water out of the pan and fill the tubers with cold water - so that they cool faster if, for example, time is running out. But you can simply leave to cool on a plate in a natural way.

  2. We clean the herring from the insides and cut off the heads, remove the skin and the main bones (for the lazy: you can take the fillet right away, but usually the herring is “out of the barrel”, entirely - much tastier and more appetizing). Cut the filet into small pieces.
  3. Peel the onion, rinse and cut into half rings. For those who do not like bitterness: you can scald chopped onions with boiling water and drain the water.
  4. Peel the potato from its “uniform” and cut it into halves or pieces, large enough.
  5. We beautifully arrange our simple dish - potatoes with herring and onions (see photo below). To do this, put it in a flat bowl: chopped herring on one end, then onion half rings, and potatoes on the other edge (now you can add a little smelling oil to it and add a little salt on top). Some people like to sprinkle this whole thing with freshly chopped greens. But you can do without it. It is considered good form to decorate the dish with the thinnest slices of lemon.
  6. Now the potatoes with onions and herring are finally ready for serving.

Note: if desired, whole tubers can be replaced with mashed potato mashed on sour cream. It perfectly acts as a side dish.

Herring salad with potatoes and onions

And you can also build an original and simple salad with the same ingredients. It is used as a cold snack for strong drinks. To prepare it, we take 4-5 potatoes, a couple of onions, two medium herring, slightly salted (barrel), vegetable oil (the best option is cold pressed, bazaar, sunflower or olive), salt and ground black pepper - at the tip of the knife. To decorate the salad, we use feathers of green onions and sprigs of dill. By the way, if you want, you can add pickled mushrooms - say, honey mushrooms. Very tasty!

Simple cooking!

  1. We prepare herring, as in the previous recipe, making fillets from it. We cut the fish into medium-sized cubes.
  2. Wash the potato, peel and boil until tender (time depends on the variety). Cool and cut into cubes.
  3. We clean and cut the onion: either finely or in half rings - as you like.
  4. If necessary - lay out a couple of spoons of pickled mushrooms.
  5. In one bowl, mix all the ingredients, adding a little vegetable oil.
  6. We decorate the salad with fresh chopped herbs and let it stand for a while at the bottom of the refrigerator. An hour later, you can serve on the table. Bon appetit to all!
