Sometimes you can hear from people something like this: "You shout directly, like a pipe of Jericho!" In this article we will try to clarify the meaning of this phrase. Let's find out what the “Jericho trumpet" is - the meaning of this term. To do this, you will have to travel to the distant past. And the Bible will tell about the event underlying the expression that interests us.
The source of knowledge mentioned above is nowadays in almost every house. Bible owners may believe in God or doubt, but it is likely that the events associated with the term “Jericho trumpet” actually took place. The biblical story is described in the Book of Joshua. This is the conquering commander, who was also an assistant and disciple of the prophet Moses.
Probably everyone knows the biblical story of how Moses drove the Israeli people through the desert for 40 years, and people constantly murmured: either they had little food, then water, then they made a golden calf for themselves instead of God. These events are explained as follows: the people of Israel came out of the slavery of Egypt, but only slavery did not come out of people's hearts. They behaved like slaves, constantly rebelling against the prophet Moses, expressing their displeasure at the slightest occasion. It is not difficult to guess that with such "warriors" the conquest of the land, which God promised to Abraham, was impossible.
Over time, people with a slave spirit died out in the desert, and their children, a new generation, matured enough to enter the Promised Land. The prophet Moses also died, having bequeathed to Joshua to be firm and courageous, and to bring people to Canaan. Now Nun became the leader of the people, and God testified to his authority by various miracles. We will have to omit some details because of their abundance. But Joshua and the new generation army decided to invade the lands of Canaan according to the will of Moses and God.
And so, having previously sent scouts, the great commander approached the city called Jericho. Soon we will find out what the “Jericho Trumpet” is, more precisely the trumpet, but for now - a little patience. This city was very well fortified and surrounded by powerful walls. In fact, it was an impregnable fortress of enormous size.
God turns to Joshua and assures the commander that without any doubt he will win a brilliant victory. The Lord’s proposed siege strategy was somewhat unusual. The priesthood and combat-ready people had to go around Jericho for seven days. Ahead went the army fully armed, and followed by seven priests, each of whom had a pipe. The expression “Jericho trumpet” begins to clear up, but this is far from the whole entertaining story. Behind the seven priests, others followed, carrying the Ark of the Covenant, and already behind them the rest of the male population.
So, the priests blew their seven trumpets, but the rest of the people did not remain silent. More precisely, they were strictly forbidden to cast their voice until the time when Joshua gave a special sign. "Exclaim!" Cried the leader on the seventh day of the detour of Jericho. The people unanimously and loudly exclaimed and the walls of the city fell. The army stormed in and conquered it. Is it true? The reader will judge, but this biblical story has many opponents, as well as others described in the Bible events.
Nevertheless, someone Dr. Brian Wood, as an employee of the University of Toronto, relatively recently announced the results of excavations conducted precisely at the location of the ancient city of Jericho. He and his assistants conducted a thorough radioactive analysis. Other research methods were also used. As a result, it turned out that the city was indeed surrounded by high and very strong walls, which were almost simultaneously destroyed. So much for the “Jericho trumpet”.
Presumably, a great many people who were screaming in unison could create sound vibrations that resonated with the frequency of strong walls. This is how their destruction happened. Well, the very expression "Jericho trumpet" in our time has this meaning: loud, trumpet, very loud voice.
