Chusovskaya Metallurgical Plant OJSC is one of the oldest steel mills in the Urals. Founded in the 19th century, it has long been the largest specialized enterprise in the country. Today, ChMZ is a leader in the production of springs for vehicles.
History reference
Founded in 1879, the Chusovskoy Metallurgical Plant became the pride of Russia. Equipped with the latest equipment at that time, he smelted millions of pounds of iron and steel annually. During the civil war, the enterprise was badly damaged, but the factory workers did not abandon their brainchild and, after the establishment of Soviet power, restored the workshops.
In the 30s, a responsible mission was assigned to the Chusovskaya Metallurgical Plant - to organize the production of spring steel for tractors and agricultural machinery. In appearance, this part does not seem to be the most complicated, however, in its manufacture, metal with outstanding characteristics is used. For its smelting requires a high production culture, appropriate equipment and possession of the "secrets" of material science.
In 1935, a blast furnace No. 3 was launched. Its volume of 280 m 3 was a record not only for the USSR. In 1936, factory workers received the first ferrovanadium in the country. The Great Patriotic War demanded an increase in production. In 1943, a new blast furnace was erected in seven months, which allowed to triple the smelting of pig iron.
Today, every second Russian car has springs from ChMZ. The Chusovskoy Metallurgical Plant, whose photo impresses with the size of its production area, is part of OMK (United Metallurgical Company), the largest industrial group. The production is located in the heart of the Ural Mountains, near the raw material base and energy sources.
Chusovsky springs
Along with metal products (long products and cast iron), the plant since 1973 produces springs for automobile transport. Today, the ChMZ autoressor workshop represents large-scale production, which outstrips similar European enterprises in terms of production volumes.
Products of the Ural steelworkers meet the requirements of both domestic and foreign standards. Chusovskoy Metallurgical Plant is certified according to ISO9001 / 2008, and the direct spring production passed certification according to ISO / TS16940 in 2011.
The personnel policy is focused on attracting young people, educating the generation of “workers of the future” who are able to quickly retrain and master related areas of work. They are trying to create decent working conditions for them, organize leisure activities, and guarantee modern medical care.
Hi-tech
An important feature of the springs manufacturing process is the full production cycle: from smelting cast iron to assembly of products. ChMZ specializes in the production of rolled products from specialized steel grades. Not without reason steel strips of the plant are used by most spring enterprises of the Russian Federation and the CIS.
In 2003, the Chusovskoy Metallurgical Plant mastered the production of innovative springs of increased durability, obtained by volume-surface quenching technology . Only a few companies in the world are able to produce these products according to the SCF technology. The new development made it possible to reduce the spring weight by 30%, and increase the service life by half - up to 200,000 km. Most models of the automaker KamAZ equipped with elastic elements produced using the SCR.
Modernization
Continuous investment in production allowed us to launch mills and rolling for blanks for parabolic springs, a high-tech thermal line with quickly adaptable dies, as well as a new painting line. The operation of the equipment is controlled by automated computerized complexes.
Every few years, the material and technical base is modernized. This allows ChMZ to offer consumers more than 500 items of spring products. Among the clients of the Chusovsky plant are the largest auto companies in the country. The nomenclature for foreign cars is also being actively mastered.

Chusovskoy Metallurgical Plant - reconstruction
The rapid growth of gas and oil production in the 2000s required significant volumes of modern pipe products. The government and OMK planned a large-scale reconstruction, involving the reorientation of significant capacities to the production of seamless pipes. Initially, Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant was to produce up to 400,000 tons of pipe rolling with subsequent increase in volumes up to 500,000 tons annually.
The project was launched in 2012 and was supported by the administration of the Perm Territory. The investment portfolio was estimated at 50 billion rubles. Organizational work was actively carried out, equipment suppliers were determined. To clear the territory, part of the workshops were dismantled. However, the sanctions of 2015, the weakening of the ruble, and changes in market conditions contributed to the freezing of an ambitious project.
