Murals are a wall painting on wet plaster with water-based paints. This technique has been known since ancient times. Most of the ancient monuments of monumental painting are made with its use. Today, the mural technique has undergone significant changes. If you wish, you can purchase a finished image on canvas, non-woven, self-adhesive base, etc. To make this spectacular decor yourself, in principle, is not difficult.
Frescoes in the interior
The technique of this mural is complex. The fact is that the image must be applied to the wall as quickly as possible, without waiting for the plaster to dry. Therefore, in modern interiors, a real mural is practically not used. The release of such images in our time put on stream. At the same time, a variety of materials can be used as the basis for the drawing.
Varieties: non-woven
Different manufacturers make murals on a non-woven wall in different ways. Paint, for example, can be applied in several stages. Or the image is simply printed on the printer. The finished drawing on top is covered with a special tool that allows you to create cracks on the surface. As a result, the image looks “antique”. Non-woven murals are a decor item that can decorate a room for absolutely any purpose. You can use such decorations both in the living room and in the bedroom or kitchen. This type of fresco is attached to ordinary glue intended for non-woven wallpaper.
Canvas
Murals on canvas are made only in Spain and Italy using a fairly sophisticated technology and are quite expensive. The image is pre-applied to the plaster base. Then it is aged and then reprinted on natural cotton canvas. It is glued to the walls with a fresco glue for heavy wallpaper. The sizes of such images can be very different. A small difficulty is that before gluing you have to cut off the excess canvas around the edges. Modern frescoes of this variety have another small drawback - they can not be washed and must be covered with wax.
Stucco drawing
The image, made on plaster, most accurately imitates an old fresco. Due to the rather significant thickness of the material, the texture of the drawing is very well transmitted. In this case, a special flexible plaster reinforced with mesh is used as the basis for the mural . Such a pattern is attached to the wall with mounting glue. After that, the space around the mural is additionally decorated with plaster. As a result, the image looks drawn directly on the wall. Such murals are a decor that is perfect not only for interior decoration, but also for decorating building facades. If desired, the image on the plaster can be used even in the bathroom, because it is not afraid of moisture.
Self-adhesive mural
The main advantage of such a mural is the ease of installation. The image is made with a special paste on a very durable non-woven base. All you need to do is to remove the protective film, attach the canvas to the wall and gently smooth it. If desired, a similar decor can be used on the ceiling. The disadvantage of this type of fresco is that, because of its insignificant thickness, it imitates an old work, it is not too realistic. Some apartment owners refuse such a decor because it somewhat resembles ordinary textured wallpaper.
Hard image
The image in this case is applied to a special - hard and at the same time light - basis. The edges of the latter are chipped to make the mural as similar as possible to the old one. The image can be mounted on the wall with mounting glue or just hung like a normal picture. Such murals are a decoration that cannot be too large (maximum 3x1.4 m).
What to choose?
Most often, the owners of apartments when choosing a variety of murals are guided by the degree of realism of the image, made "antique", as well as its value. The cheapest option is a stucco mural. Since this decor is very spectacular, it is used in interiors quite often. The mural on a non-woven basis is somewhat more expensive. However, sticking the image to the wall in this case will be much easier. The most expensive option is canvas. In principle, any murals can become a real interior decoration (photos on the page clearly demonstrate this). Therefore, the choice depends primarily on the personal preferences of the owners of the apartment.
How to make a mural yourself
Even the cheapest images made on plaster are quite expensive (6000 rubles per 1 m 2 for 2014). However, it is not worth it to despair for those who do not have enough funds for such a decor. An excellent way out of the situation can be a home-made fresco. Doing it yourself is not so difficult. What is the procedure for making such a decor? In fact, there are a lot of technologies for creating an “old” fresco. The easiest way is to purchase special thin wipes, with ready-made images printed on them. In addition to them, you will need to buy acrylic paints and PVA glue.
Previously, the place where the fresco will subsequently be located is limited to adhesive tape. Next, the wall is painted with acrylic paint. Its tone should be in harmony with the color of the napkin itself. Such paint dries very quickly - 10-15 minutes. The pattern from the napkin is not cut out, but is torn out so that the edges are uneven. This will make the mural as realistic as possible. Then, two protective layers are removed from the back of the drawing, applied to the wall and smeared with glue directly on top. PVA will infiltrate thin material, and the image will be firmly fixed to the surface.

At the next stage, the texture is attached to the drawing. For this, putty is used. It is applied to the wall around the image with an ordinary sponge. After the putty dries (about an hour), two layers of acrylic paint are applied to the wall surface, also around the drawing, darker and lighter. Basically, the mural is ready. However, if desired, it can also be “aged”. To do this, on the wall - until the paint dries - pass the same sponge, but the reverse, hard side. It is necessary to process the surface until the plaster is visible in places on it.
A self-made fresco can become a real highlight of any interior. For those who do not want to spend time independently making such a decor, it remains just to purchase it in a store.
