The curtain rod for curtains is an integral part of the interior of any room, chosen in accordance with the style and design of the room. Installation of curtain rods is usually performed when all repair work has already been completed, and depends on the type of decorative element and the method of its fastening.
Types of curtain rods
All curtains can be classified on several grounds:
- according to the material of manufacture - wooden, plastic, metal;
- by type of construction - rail (the movement of the curtains is carried out along special tracks), string (represent a strong, tightly stretched cable), rod (based on a metal rod);
- by type of fixture - wall and ceiling;

Material selection
The most expensive are the curtain rods from different species of wood and metal, such products not only perform their main function well, but are also decorative elements, add a twist to the interior of the room.
Plastic and aluminum products are cheaper and simpler, most often they hide behind beautiful and expensive curtains, and are used only for their main purpose.
For heavy and massive curtains, it is recommended to choose good quality metal or plastic cornices. They will reliably hold the curtains, will not break and will not bend, will not make the whole decorative design of the window heavier.

Necessary tools
Installation of cornices involves the use of construction tools and materials, among which the following will be needed:
- puncher or hammer drill, it all depends on the surface of the mount;
- level;
- roulette;
- pencil;
- screws and dowels;
- screwdriver (screwdriver);
- ladder.
It is recommended that all tools be prepared in advance so as not to give up unfinished work and not to run to the hardware store.
General rules for fastening
Before installing the cornice, you must take into account the main points that will allow you to attach the product correctly:
- the cornice should not interfere with the window opening; therefore, when mounting it on the wall, it is necessary to hang the product no less than 5 cm from the opening;
- the ceiling curtain is mounted at such a distance from the wall (window) that the curtain descends in a beautiful stream, does not cling to the battery or window sill;
- in the presence of heating pipes, it is important to consider their size so that they do not interfere with the installation of a decorative element;
- the product can be installed the entire width of the room or the width of the window, while it should protrude beyond the slopes of the opening by 40 cm.
Wall Mount Features
Installing the cornice on the wall consists in fixing the bracket, which will directly hold the curtain. For wood and plastic parts, one dowel and self-tapping screw are used, for metal - three.
Installation of a wall cornice consists of the following steps:
- Marking the brackets with a tape measure, level and pencil, which, you must remember the general rules for attaching a decorative element: it should not interfere with the window opening, the curtain should flow beautifully, not cling to the window sill and battery.
- Drilling holes for dowels with a puncher or hammer drill, their installation.
- Fastening brackets with screws using a screwdriver or screwdriver.
After doing this work, you must once again make sure that the brackets are fixed at the same level, have the same distance relative to the window.
Further actions depend on the type of wall cornice:
- When installing the rod, it is necessary to take into account its length, if it exceeds two meters, then it is recommended to use a third bracket, mounted in the middle. Rings on such a cornice should be worn in advance, leaving at the same time one element in front of the bracket, which will allow the curtain to not move out of the curtain. The edge of the bar is decorated with decorative fleuron.
- When installing a baguette cornice, the whole structure is first assembled, according to the attached diagram, then it is attached to the brackets, often part of the product is screwed to the ceiling surface.
Features of ceiling mount
The installation of the cornice on the ceiling depends on the type of product: string, plastic tire, profile.
A curtain-string is a steel or polymer cable mounted on special fasteners that simultaneously act as tensioning mechanisms. The installation process consists of the following points:
- holes are made in the ceiling with a puncher, dowels are clogged in previously marked places;
- fastenings are fixed using self-tapping screws;
- the string is threaded and pulled using a special mechanism;
- the whole structure is closed with a decorative box.
The curtain rail is also attached to the ceiling, usually hidden under the curtains, so it does not carry a decorative function. Installing a plastic cornice includes the following steps:
- if the product is longer than necessary, then it must be cut using a square and a hacksaw for metal;
- then they drill holes for fastening in the cornice itself, make the first depression in the middle, and the rest - at an equal distance from it, the heavier the curtains, the more holes should be;
- a tire with drilled holes is applied to the ceiling and a central hole is marked, a groove is cut through the mark, a dowel is inserted and the cornice is fixed to one self-tapping screw;
- align the product with a level, mark all other holes, drill them and attach the tire to the ceiling on the dowel-nails.
The profile cornice has a rich color gamut, which allows you to pick it up to the tone of the curtain or ceiling. Some models are equipped with a mechanical drive, which is very convenient when too long curtains do not allow you to open windows manually. Installation of curtain rods from the profile is carried out in the same way as the plastic tire.
Fixing curtains to drywall
The drywall ceiling is not as strong as a concrete slab, so it is not recommended to hang a heavy cornice or massive curtains on it. However, there is no exception to the rule, any decorative element can be attached to drywall, if the entire structure is thought out in advance.
For this, during the installation of the ceiling, it is necessary to make mortgages from the beam in those places where the cornice is supposed to be fixed. In this case, the width and length of the mortgage must exceed the parameters of the product itself. Such an additional structure will provide a reliable and strong fixation of the entire structure.
Features of mounting to a stretch ceiling
When installing a stretch ceiling, the cornice is usually attached to the wall, but it can also be fixed on the fabric. This method is absolutely safe if the fastening is made according to simple rules. The installation of the cornice on the suspended ceiling includes the following points:
- the choice of curtains before installing the fabric, this is necessary in order to correctly select the mortgages, the dimensions of which correspond to the parameters of the decorative product;
- marking of fixing the cornice is carried out, in these places bars of wood or plywood are fixed, strictly set according to the level of the future ceiling;
- after mounting the stretch fabric, a ceiling curtain is attached to the pre-fixed invoices, so that the fabric does not disperse at the puncture sites, special rings are glued to it, which protect the fabric from tearing.
