Toyota Soarer: all the fun about four generations of the once-popular model

Toyota Soarer is a coupe-built car from 1981 to 2005. This car was developed as a replacement for a model such as the Toyota Markll Coupe. First there was the first generation (Z1), and behind it the others that became more successful. Well, it is worth briefly telling about this model, as well as its advantages and features.

Second, third and fourth generations

So, the subsequent versions of Toyota Soarer were distinguished by a more elegant, rounded body (unlike the first generation). As a matter of fact, no other changes were observed in the Z2 models. But the third generation was remembered for something special. It was on its basis that Lexus SC was developed. This luxurious coupe has become one of the best that was only produced in Asian countries in the nineties.

In 2001, the fourth generation (the so-called 40th series) was published. It was a Toyota Soarer - convertible coupe. Interestingly, outside of Japan, this car was sold as a Lexus SC430. In 2005, the fourth generation was completed.

Technical Features of Z1 and Z2

And now in more detail I would like to talk about all the above models. So, the first generation versions were equipped with 6-cylinder engines. Their volume was 3, 2.8 and 2 liters, respectively. The first versions were rear-wheel drive. The cars boasted such features as an on-board computer (even with a touch panel) that controlled climate control, a digital tachometer and speedometer (with LEDs), and other electronic innovations. In addition, these cars featured MacPherson strut suspension. True, only the front - rear mounted diagonal levers.

A choice of potential buyers was offered either a 5-speed “mechanics” or a 4-speed “automatic”. By the way, the first generation Toyota Soarer had an automatic self-diagnosis system.

Subsequent versions (the latest generations of the Z1 and all Z2 cars) boasted ABS, cruise control, a leather driver’s seat (adjustable in 7 planes), ventilated disc brakes and air suspension.

In the late 80s, impressive new engines appeared: 1G-GTEU, producing 210 “horses”, and 7M-GTEU with a capacity of 240 liters. from.

Features of the new luxury coupe (30th series)

That was the name of the third generation Toyota Soarer. Cars of the 30th series had the richest and most modern equipment among all the Asian cars that were produced at that time. Interestingly, this was the first model with a GPS navigator installed by the manufacturer. Potential customers were also available with twin-turbo cars with a 5-speed automatic.

In these models the same engines and gearboxes were installed as on Toyota Supra cars. There were engines of 2.5, 3 and 4 liters. Turbocharged engines, twin-turbocharged, with pneumatic or active suspension and thrusting rear wheels were offered. For these Toyota Soarer models, the specifications were really decent. Particularly pleased with the version 1JZ-GTE 2.5L Twin Turbo. The Toyota Soarer tuning was special in this model : the front bumper was transformed, the side body kit became more effective and the headlights more expressively “looked”. The sports version also boasted exquisite finishes (natural wood and leather), cruise control and electric seats.

Characteristics of the latest models

The fortieth series (i.e., the 4th generation) was constantly compared by critics and motorists with the Lexus of that time. And they really were similar in characteristics. But what about looks? The car boasted a rigid folding roof (manufacturers decided to make a claim for similarity with the Mercedes-Benz SL) and a fairly powerful 4.3-liter V8 engine. This unit was special in that it had variable valve timing. The engine produced 280 horsepower, and it accelerated to hundreds in just 6 seconds.

The exterior, by the way, has changed. Some did not like him - it was rumored that the slender silhouette, which many Toyota lovers loved so much, had sunk into oblivion. It seemed to many that the body seemed visually heavier and shorter. But in general, the appearance turned out to be original and attractive.

It is interesting that the 40th series and Lexus models of that time were distinguished by the same design. But as Lexus became a more significant brand, the Soarer model ceased in 2005.

However, if you try, you can find these cars for sale. Of course, there are very few of them, especially on the territory of Russia, and all of them are second-hand, but still the idea is realistically possible (if there is a desire and a certain amount). True, the old cars, most likely, can not be found - only the last generation. By the way, the car will cost somewhere between 300-700 thousand rubles (depending on condition and configuration).
