Often, novice users of personal computers have a question about how to type Roman numerals on the keyboard. This number system is often used to mark lists, for example. Within the framework of the material brought to your attention, various methods for solving this problem will be described. Based on their comparison, the one that is easiest to use in practice will be selected.
Standard solution
The simplest answer to the question of how to type Roman numerals on the keyboard is to use the English keyboard layout. It is enabled by default in every version of the Windows operating system, so there should be no problems with the input process. The only thing you need to know in this case is the set of numbers that are used in this number system. These include:
- β1β is the number βIβ (alternative is the English letter βIβ).
- β5β is the number βVβ (in the same alphabet it is βBβ).
- β10β is βXβ (you can put Russian βXβ or English βXβ).
- "50" - is designated as "L" (in the Latin layout of each keyboard it is present).
- β100β is βCβ (in this case, everything is similar to β10β).
- β500β is designated as βDβ.
- "1000" - in the Latin numeral "M".
Combining these numbers, you can get any number. It is worth noting one important nuance. If a smaller number is in front of a larger number, then it is subtracted from it. For example, IV - will be 4 in Arabic terms. But if everything is the other way around, after the larger is less, then everything is summarized. As an example, we can cite 6 - VI. Knowing these rules, understanding how to type Roman numerals on the keyboard is not difficult. Only here it is not always possible to remember all this. In such cases, it is best to make a cheat sheet and use it when dialing such numbers.
ASCII codes
An alternative way to enter Roman numerals on the keyboard of a laptop or desktop computer is to use the so-called ASCII codes. That is, the same English letters can be typed with the ALT key combination and sequential dialing of the Arabic number combination on the extended keyboard (do not forget that the Num Lock key must be in the on state). Possible combinations of codes are shown in table 1. Using this method greatly complicates everything, so itβs easier to put into practice the one that was given earlier.
Table 1.
ASCII - codes for a set of Roman numbers.
No. p / p | Arabic numeral | Roman numeral | ASCII code |
one | one | I | 73 |
2 | 5 | V | 86 |
3 | 10 | X | 88 |
four | fifty | L | 76 |
5 | one hundred | FROM | 67 |
6 | 500 | D | 68 |
7 | 1000 | M | 77 |
Word
The easiest way to type Latin numbers on the keyboard is in Word or any other office application. For this, a special function is provided in this application group. The dialing order in this case is as follows:
- Press the key combination Ctrl and F9.
- Next, a special recount function will start and the brackets {} will appear. In them you need to type the following = desired_arabish_number \ * ROMAN.
- Then press the function key F9.
- After that, our Arabic number is converted to Roman.
The above algorithm is really simpler than previously described. But he has one significant drawback - it works only in office applications, and if you need to dial some Roman number in Photoshop, then it is already impossible to use it. In extreme cases, you can dial the desired number here. Then select using the manipulator, copy and then paste into another application.
Summary
As part of this material, various methods have been proposed for how to type Roman numerals on a keyboard. Comparing them, we can conclude that it is easiest to use the English alphabet, in which there are all the necessary numbers. This solution works in all applications without exception. Its only drawback is the need to know the numbers of this number system. But this issue can be resolved. If you often have to use Roman numbers, then you already remember them. Well, in extreme cases, you can make a draft, which will greatly simplify this task.
