Windows of residential and office premises are often decorated with blinds. For this reason, in the construction markets of any city you can find a large assortment of similar products. You can easily pick up the product of the right colors and parameters, which perfectly fits into your home interior.
But what if the parameters of the window opening were not measured correctly and you purchased an interior element that is completely unsuitable in size? In this situation, you can independently adjust the product to the desired size.
In our article we will tell you how to shorten the blinds with your own hands. Using the described methods, you can resize new slats that were recently acquired. Also, with their help, you can set the necessary parameters for the old canvas, which you decided to hang on another window opening.
Variety of products
Modern blinds are very diverse, but still divided into two main groups:
- products with a horizontal arrangement of strips;
- vertical varieties.
Each option consists of a number of components with which you will have to work to perform independent repair of the blinds. If you have to fit vertical products that need to be reduced in width, then the cornice, inner stock, chain and lamellas themselves must be trimmed.
Horizontal varieties are a little easier to work with. The shortening process comes down to trimming the stripes themselves and the cord on which they are fixed. Let's consider in more detail all available methods.
Reduce the length of horizontal products
Before shortening horizontal blinds, measure the parameters of the new opening several times. In this process, it is important not to make mistakes, as increasing the parameters of the canvas will be difficult, and in some cases impossible.
If you need to reduce the height of the canvas, follow these steps:
- Move the product to the open position. Release the retaining cord at the level of the lowest strip. It can be untied or just cut off.
- Pull the rope to the level at which you need to reduce the height of the canvas.
- Disconnect all excess louvre strips from the structure. When the canvas is adjusted to the required height, fasten the cord under the bottom lamella. Do this work very carefully, as you can shift the strips you need to remove the strips. To return them to their original position, you have to tinker.
This completes the reduction in the length of the blinds. To prevent the cord from cracking during operation, treat its edges with a lighter flame.
How to reduce the width of horizontal curtains?
As you can see, removing the extra slats is the easiest, but how to shorten the horizontal blinds in width? For these jobs, prepare a pencil, measuring tool, sandpaper, hacksaw or electric jigsaw.
Start work with careful measurements of an aperture. If the curtain is hanging on the window, use a pencil to make appropriate marks on each lamella. Designate the point from which you need to trim the strip. Reduce the width of the canvas should not be one, but immediately from two sides.
Now remove the product from the window and place it on the floor. Repair of blinds is carried out after removing all the strips. Place the panels in one stack and securely fasten them. For this purpose, it is better to use a clamp, but you can do with ordinary tape.

Reduce the width of vertical products
The most difficult work lies with the owners of vertical curtains, which must be reduced in width. Before shortening the blinds horizontally, remove the product from the window and make marks on the cornice. Free it from the lamellas and set them aside.
Inside the cornice you will see a metal rod, it is you who will need to cut it with a grinder. Follow these steps:
- Release the stem by carefully removing the washer with petals. It is very important to maintain the integrity of these petals.
- Make a small incision 2 cm from the edge of the product. Be careful not to damage the cord going to the ledge.
- Cut the rod, remove the end part of the product, remove the washer and the stem itself.
- File the cut edge and push the stem into the washer in the direction of the petals.
- Now cut the cornice itself, file cut.
- Remove excess hooks from the cornice by unfastening them from each other.
Replace the end element of the cornice and the tab washer. Now shorten the cord itself. With a screwdriver, remove its plug, cut off the extra piece of the cord and secure it again with the plug.
How to shorten the length of vertical type blinds ?
Reducing the length of vertical stripes is much easier. To do this, use a long ruler or tape measure to measure the height of the opening.
Next, remove the strip from the ledge and follow these steps:
- Using a knife, gently pry the plastic cover with the knife. After that, remove the hooks from the cornice and disconnect them from the canvases.
- From each strip, remove the plastic weighting compound, which is located on the bottom of all the curtain elements.
- Measure the height you need and make an allowance of a few centimeters to fix the weighting agent.
- Before shortening the vertical blinds in height, re-measure the opening, since it will be impossible to lengthen a short curtain. At marked locations, trim each lane. Process the slice with fire, otherwise the fabric will begin to bloom.
- Tuck the edge of each strip and gently iron it. Attach a weight bar to each canvas and reassemble the curtain in the reverse order.
At the final stage, you can reduce the length of the regulatory chain. Find a plastic lock on it, unzip it and free both ends of the cord. Cut it to the length you need, put it in the lock again and snap it.
