The computer restarts: possible causes and solutions

A computer is a complex device that can periodically fail. It is not easy to independently diagnose the cause of “strange behavior” of the system. Not all users will look for problems in the PC, but simply take it for repair. Therefore, when the computer restarts continuously, many are lost and immediately run to repair.

Reasons for the problem

Why does the computer restart itself? Determining the cause will not be easy. And it is not always immediately possible to do this, especially if you are an inexperienced PC user. What is happening with the system?

You turn on the computer, the operating system starts to load, programs open normally, and at first glance everything seems to work correctly. But at some point, the computer starts to reboot. And it’s good if it boots up again and everything is in order. Worse if the system starts an endless reboot.

Computer reboot

Here you will have to consider some of the causes of the problem:

  • hardware conflict;
  • malnutrition;
  • problems with contacts;
  • overheating of components;
  • viruses and malware.

Hardware conflict

If you are faced with the fact that the computer is constantly restarting, a functional failure may have occurred. If a pair of devices that are connected to the system starts to work incorrectly, a reboot may occur. Usually this happens after installing a new device.

Why is this happening? Since the north bridge on the board is largely responsible for compatibility, it begins to block the operability of the device, which does not fully or completely does not meet the requirements of the motherboard.

Due to the fact that the system itself cannot disconnect unsuitable equipment from the connector, it finds its own way to solve the problem - it restarts the computer.

Eating problems

One of the main reasons why the computer itself restarts is because of a power supply problem. Most often, it is the problems with the PSU that lead to the fact that the PC loses its performance. But there are several malfunctions associated with the power supply:

  1. Failure of capacitors. This is a frequent breakdown of low-quality or outdated models. The contacts are broken or they have dried out.
  2. Housing contamination. Dust and dirt can get into the power supply, so it is important to keep the fan clean. Perhaps its speed has significantly decreased due to pollution, which means that the temperature inside the PSU has risen.
  3. Damaged contacts. The power supply is connected to the board using the appropriate connector. Since he has many contacts, it may happen that due to a violation even of a couple of them, the PSU will not work properly, causing similar problems.

Breaking contact

In addition to problems with the power supply connector, the same situation may arise with other components of the system. In most cases, contact disturbance is associated with power outages, voltage fluctuations. It happens that the device independently turns off and then connects.

The operating system does not know how to respond to such errors. In order not to burn out the entire motherboard, the computer restarts.

Overheating of the entire system or individual components

Perhaps the computer was originally installed poor-quality or defective cooling system. Because of this, all components can suffer from overheating and try to cope with it in different ways. There are several types of faults:

  • the cooling system is outdated or was initially defective;
  • the computer is located next to the heater or in the sun, because of which it receives additional heat;
  • Thermal grease has not changed for a long time, which must be periodically removed and used more recent;
  • A dirty housing can also cause overheating.

Malware

Unfortunately, viruses do a lot of damage to the system. If you are a neat and attentive PC user, then some hardware malfunctions will happen to you extremely rarely. But no one can be safe from viruses, given their current power.

Malware

Some malware is so dangerous that it does not even need to be installed to get into the system. They themselves find the way to the computer through emails, online advertising and utilities.

Correction of the situation

If the computer is constantly restarting, you first need to eliminate the likelihood of a system infection. Therefore, it is important to scan the system with antivirus. If you don’t have one, you can install a trial version for free. It is best to use Kaspersky. This is the most effective antivirus. And although some consider it sparing for the system, in our case it really can solve the problem.

If you can’t even get to the desktop due to the fact that the computer restarts, then you will have to run “Safe Mode”. This menu is great for such situations.

To start this mode, you need to turn off and turn on the computer. Immediately after turning on the system, click on the F8 key. In most cases, this button launches a new menu. Here you can select several boot modes, among which we will need.

So we get to the desktop, where we can either remove the source of the virus (if we know it), or run the antivirus to search for malware.

Power Supply Diagnostics

If you were able to check for viruses in the system, but the computer (Windows) still restarts itself, you need to examine the power supply. This device, unfortunately, is often the cause of such failures.

Power Supply Cleaning

First, look at the back of the PC case, in the area where the PSU is located. There you will notice a fan. It is necessary to check that it is operational and rotates. Also, on the grid of the power supply, you can assess the contamination of the device.

If you notice a malfunction in the power supply, disconnect the PC from the network. Wait for it to cool and get to the block. After taking out the device, you can unwind it and see the degree of contamination. Burned or dried capacitors may also be noticed.

If the situation repeats after cleaning the power supply, it is better to take it to repair or purchase a new one. Remember that the choice of power supply is an important process, because it is the "heart" of the system, which feeds all its components with current.

Overheating elimination

If you notice that the computer restarts after a certain load, there is a possibility that the cause of this was overheating. Increased temperature conditions can say a lot about the health of the system. To do this, you can install a utility, for example, MSI Afterburner. And although its main purpose is acceleration, it has a tab in which you can observe the temperature indicators of each component system.

You may have noticed that the processor temperature is too high. In this case, it is likely that the thermal grease is dry or the standard cooling system is malfunctioning. Then you have to disassemble the computer, unscrew the cooler and check the condition of the thermal paste.

Cleaning the system

In the utility, you may find that the computer restarts because all components have an excessive temperature. This may indicate contamination in the enclosure or poor-quality cooling system. Again, open the computer, clean it thoroughly from dust, if this does not help, we think about how to improve CO.

In general, even a standard cooling system easily copes with overheating. And if earlier there really were problems with high temperature conditions, now processors are released very economical. They produce little heat, respectively, do not even require the purchase of a third-party cooler.

An exception now may be gaming systems that operate at higher frequencies, with several video cards and other additional equipment.

Conflict Resolution

If the computer (Windows 10) restarts itself, there may be hardware compatibility issues, as mentioned earlier. How to deal with this problem?

Utility for drivers

Need to check device drivers. Of course, manually this will not be easy. Therefore, it is better to install the Driver Booster utility. This is a universal software that will independently scan the system, check all drivers and find outdated ones. The program, with your permission, will update the device software and fix system errors associated with them.

If you understand that a constant restart of the computer began after installing a new device, try turning it off and working without it. If all is well, you will have to return the device to the store.
