DIY do-it-yourself shelving rack

A few decades ago, it was very difficult to get furniture. This contributed to the fact that home craftsmen made it themselves. Today, in each store of the corresponding goods, you can find a model for every taste and budget, but to this day it is customary to buy sheet materials that go to the production of cabinet furniture.

The rack is used in the decoration of the interior quite often. It has functional qualities, and its appearance does not complicate the perception of the room. You can buy such a piece of furniture in the store, but its dimensions, shape and color are not always suitable for the buyer. In this case, it is better to engage in the manufacture of the structure yourself, using chipboard, which will save and simplify the work.

Before making a rack, you should decide whether the design should be cheap or stylish. Thickened details can create a sense of monumentality and massiveness. Such a piece of furniture will look expensive, but it will take twice as much materials, effort and time. Therefore, it is recommended to use 16 mm chipboard.

Horizontal planes will need 6 pieces, the size of each of which should be 1200x350 mm. Vertical planes should be cut in the amount of 15 pieces, the parameters of each of them should be equal to 320x320 mm. If you decide to make a stylish shelving from chipboard, then the number of parts should be multiplied by two. This option will stand on horizontal bars in the color of the chipboard, but they can be replaced with furniture legs selected in the hardware store.

In addition to legs and confirmations, you should purchase a melamine edge with an adhesive base. Vertical planes will be visible from two sides, and composite parts are best fixed between each other with brackets from the working ends. The edge must be acquired wide; the standard 22 mm must be discarded.

It makes no sense to saw a laminated board at home, unless you have a circular saw with a quality blade. These manipulations are best entrusted to professionals who are engaged in the manufacture of furniture. But you can stick the edge with your own hands, using an ordinary iron to heat the glue surface. The regulator must be set to 3/4 of the maximum power.

After that, you need to attach the edge to the end of the parts, warm up and come with a dry rag. Use a rag on the surface several times to make sure the edges are snug. The protruding excess is trimmed with a knife and processed with fine-grained sandpaper. It’s not worth zealous for grinding, otherwise you will get a chamfer, which is useless on furniture made of chipboard.

When making a rack from chipboard, you need to use confirmations as screeds. Through-plane 8-mm holes are made in the plane; at the ends of the parts, 5-mm holes must be made, deepening by 60 mm. In order not to encounter difficulties when using manual keys, which are sold together with confirmations, you should purchase a hexagonal bit for a screwdriver. In order for the rack from the chipboard to be original, the vertical planes can be positioned as you like. The main requirement in this case is that the holes for the fasteners coincide, and the design itself is stable.

Detailing involves the preparation of 20 sidewalls of cubes of square shape with a side of 300 mm. Large shelves will have dimensions equal to 700x300 mm. They will need 10 pieces, as well as small shelves. The dimensions of the latter will be 500x300 mm. Detailing from fiberboard involves cutting 5 blanks with dimensions equal to 695x295 mm. Another 5 elements should have dimensions equal to 495x295 mm.

When racks are made of chipboard, photos of such finished structures and a description of the work should always be at hand with the master. So, for example, they will make it clear that the ends should be glued with a melamine edge. It is selected in the color of the base material. Confirmations with the above sizes will be required for work. You should also buy furniture nails, their sizes will be 1.5x25 mm. Get 4x30 mm screws. With their help, you can pull together the cubes as soon as you make a beautiful design.

Shelving with chipboard shelves can be made only after you see that there is a certain set of tools available, among them:

  • screwdriver;
  • drill;
  • pencil;
  • roulette;
  • hammer;
  • bits for a screwdriver.

After all the tools and parts are ready, you can proceed with the assembly.

Work methodology

In order to make racks, chipboard is often used by home craftsmen. The technology provides for the assembly of the cube, for this, on the sidewall, it is necessary to note the rear and front edges, as well as the lower and upper. Letters are placed on the plane, this will allow you to navigate. 40 mm should be measured from the back and front parts, while 8 mm should be measured from the lower and upper parts. This will allow you to mark the sidewall under the confirmations.

At the marks obtained, 8 mm holes are drilled. The shelves will have the same width and different lengths, their width will need to be drilled. Holes are made in the thickness of parts using a 5 mm drill; for this, it is necessary to deepen by 60 mm. To get the cube, the shelves are pulled together with the sidewalls. The hardboard can be nailed, it is important to maintain right angles. Confirmation hats are decorated with plugs, which can be purchased at the hardware store.

Recommendations for work

Particleboard racks for the home should have a solid foundation, if the structure will have an impressive height. Before starting work, it is necessary to mark the wall. For load-bearing supports in this case, wooden bars are usually used. If the rack will have the height of the room, then the base is attached not only to the floor, but also to the ceiling. Wooden bars in this case act as an excellent base, they can have a rectangular or square shape. Everything will rest on the final size of the finished structure, the width and depth of the shelves.

The frame is twisted with self-tapping screws, and the angles are strengthened by trims. The base to the wall can be fixed, then the rack will have a high degree of stability. It is important to ensure that the support legs are vertical. Cross lateral braces will ensure the reliability of the rack, which will make the structure rigid. These factors must be considered if the rack is subjected to high loads.

Conclusion

If the described piece of furniture will reach the height of the ceiling, then finished supports can be sheathed not only chipboard, but also MDF. In this case, fastening is carried out to the bars, on the sides, above and below. The result is a finished box that does not have a back wall. But if you wish, you can supplement the rack with it. The simplest design consists only of shelves and bars. After completion of work, the material can be painted.
