A cupcake is a sweet confectionery with raisins, ground nuts or jam. In most cases, either yeast or biscuit dough is used to prepare it. The first state where this dish is mentioned is considered to be Ancient Rome. A little later, this recipe spread throughout Europe.
Initially, this cake was made from barley puree with the addition of pomegranate, nuts and raisins. Such pastries were hard to reach and appeared on the table only among wealthy and noble people. At one time, muffins were considered a special delicacy, which had a pleasant taste, aroma and delicate filling.
The origin of the word "cupcake"
As we mentioned earlier, this delicacy came to us from Ancient Rome. Naturally, over the course of so many years, the recipe has been modified, and some ingredients have replaced others. Now, our cupcake is associated with lush biscuit dough, fruit filling and crushed walnuts.
Many foreigners do not know the meaning of the word “cupcake”. If you show them our pastries, you will hear “this is a muffin” in response. Of course, the goodies are similar, but the latter have a slightly different story and method of preparation. The first mention of the muffin was in England. Around the 20th century, such a “delicacy” was baked from scraps of dough for pies, rolls and cakes. Such pastry was eaten only by people of the lower classes and professions, for example, servants, craftsmen and cooks.
What language is the word cupcake from?
Some cooking enthusiasts often asked a similar question. It is interesting to know what we are preparing, where this dish came to us from, and what its history is. However, it is difficult to answer this question, because each country had its own baking and the secrets of its preparation.
Many historians are inclined to believe that “cupcake” is a Polish word, while others claim the opposite. According to them, this value came to us from Rome, as well as the recipe itself.
