How did it start
In 1899, the Polytechnic Institute in St. Petersburg was founded on behalf of the Minister of Finance S. Yu. Witte, immediately received the name of Sovereign Peter the Great, which it still bears with honor. The organization of the new educational institution was also carried out by like-minded ministers, including D. I. Mendeleev, who became an honorary member of the institute. His portrait has been showing off in the Council Chamber for more than a hundred years. Classes at the electromechanical, economic, shipbuilding and metallurgical departments began in 1902. These industries at that time were the most advanced and promising. In 1907, new faculties opened - chemical, mechanical, civil engineering, and in 1909 aeronautics courses appeared - the first Russian aviation school. In 1914, six thousand students studied at all departments of the institute (now 30 197).
The buildings for the institute were erected under the watchful guidance of a special commission for construction, which was created from the very beginning - in 1899. The construction was carried out on the outskirts, near the village of Sosnovka, the design and construction was carried out by the architectural workshop of E.F. Virriha.
A whole complex of buildings was designed - a campus very similar to Oxford and Cambridge: the main building, two dormitories, a chemical and mechanical building. In 1902, the construction was completed. It turned out beautifully: the main building in the neoclassical style looks very Petersburg-like, both in configuration and in prevailing color. The internal layout is very well thought out - the windows of the auditoriums, all facing the south-west, allow maximum use of natural daylight.
Library
The fundamental university library opened in 1902. She was very rich from the beginning, and gradually new wonderful collections of books from S. Yu. Witte, from the professors - P. B. Struve, A. P. Fan der Flit, Yu. S. Gambarov, K P. Boklevsky, B.E. Nolde and many others. And now the composition of the library funds is unique.
It is not determined only by the disciplines that are studied within the university, there is a huge amount of specialized literature on the exact, natural, technical, applied sciences, as well as large sections of the humanities - books on history, law, economics, finance, it’s simply impossible to list everything . Structure
Books come in handy for all kinds, because the university prepares students in 208 different profiles, bachelors prepare in 57 areas, there are thirteen specializations, 216 master's programs and 55 areas in which masters prepare. In 2014, the training of scientific and pedagogical personnel began in 25 areas of graduate school and in 94 specialties of postgraduate education of scientific personnel.
There are thirteen institutes with units of additional education, a large complex of research institutions, including research and educational centers, a research and technology institute, and research and production structures. The university also has branches - in Cherepovets, Sosnovy Bor, Cheboksary. Now on campus there are thirty educational and industrial buildings, fifteen dormitories, ten residential buildings, as well as the House of Scientists and a wonderful sports complex.
Last decades
In 1989, it was decided to rename the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute, and it became known as the State Polytechnic University. In 1990, this decision was approved. In 1994, a publishing publishing center was formed at the university, now - the Publishing House of the Polytechnic University.
Today, the university has a powerful printing base and operates under state publishing licenses. The founder of the university is the Ministry of Science and Education of the Russian Federation. The teachers here have always been the most stellar. And now, students are taught by twenty-five academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences, more than five hundred professors.
