A bit of history
Pokrovsky Monastery in Moscow has a rich past, closely connected with the history of the capital.
Pokrovsky Stavropegial Convent was founded almost 400 years ago. In 1635, by decree of Tsar Mikhail Feodorovich, land and money were allocated from the treasury and a wooden Pokrovskaya church was built, which lasted about two hundred years.
Interestingly, the Pokrovsky monastery was originally called Bozhedomsky, since the church was built on the site of the Wretched House. For more than 300 years, unburied dead have been buried here. Once a year, in the spring, a priest from a local church held a rite over the dead.
Tradition says that the body of False Dmitry the Second was brought to the Poor House. After he was thrown among thieves and criminals, terrible frosts began in Moscow. It only became warmer in the capital when the corpse was removed from the grave, taken to Lower Cauldrons, put to fire and shot with ash from a cannon ...
In 1808, a stone cathedral was erected on the site of an old monastery church .
Where did the modern name of the temple come from? The monastery in honor of the Protection of the Mother of God was built after the death of the father of Tsar Mikhail Feodorovich - Patriarch Filaret, who died on the feast of the Protection.
In 1854, the temple was rebuilt anew. This was due to the fact that in 1812, after the invasion of Napoleon, the monastery was devastated and subjected to desecration. The temple was restored gradually: by the twentieth century, two churches were built on the territory - the Protection of the Mother of God and the Resurrection.
With the advent of Soviet power, the Pokrovsky Stavropegial Monastery was again ruined. In 1929 the bell tower was destroyed, the Ascension and Pokrovsky churches were closed. The church cemetery was converted into a Culture Park, which has survived to this day. For 70 years, various organizations have been located in the church.
Revival of the Intercession Monastery
In 1994, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church decided to reconstruct the Pokrovsky monastery, making it a female monastery. Pokrovsky Stavropegial Convent became a real treasure for Moscow believers.
In 1998, the relics of the old woman Matrona were transferred from the cemetery. In 2004, Matrona was officially ranked among the saints revered in Russia. This will replace the Pokrovsky monastery in Moscow - Matron became his patron. The monastery has become one of the most important pilgrimage centers.
Righteous Old Lady Matrona
The Blessed Matrona of Moscow was born in 1881 in the village of Sebino, Tula province. The real name is Matron Dimitrievna Nikonova.
She was born in a large peasant family, where three children already grew up. They were so poor that Matrona's mother, Natalia, decided to send her child to an orphanage.
However, she had a prophetic dream, where the future daughter appeared before her mother in the form of a large white bird. Mother remembered that the bird's eyes were closed. The bird sat on her hand.
A deeply religious woman decided to leave the baby in the family. The child was born blind, but his mother immediately fell in love with a blind child. The matron was not just blind - there were only closed eyelids in place of the eyes.
However, the Lord gave her inner vision, which allowed her to predict events and see the spiritual essence of man. This gift was opened at the girl when she was 7 years old.
Matron easily predicted various events. They say that once a girl informed her mother about a big fire. The mother was frightened, but her daughter reassured her: they would not suffer, and the house would not burn. Surprisingly, a fire soon broke out in the village, half of the houses burned down. Matron’s house didn’t even touch the fire.
The Matrona family was very religious and pious. The girl spent almost all her free time in the church. Neighboring children offended her, so she did not play with them. When her mother felt sorry for her, the girl answered her that her brothers and sister were unhappy, and she was happy. She did not consider herself flawed - from childhood Matronushka felt her chosenness. Later her legs were taken away , and for the rest of her life she could only sit and lie.
Gradually, crowds of people began to come to the Nikonovs' house, who asked for the healing, support and advice of the Matronushka. Her fame spread throughout Russia and even beyond.
Miracles performed by the Matron during life
Saint Matron healed people by touching and reciting prayers over water. She predicted a revolution in Russia, the Great Patriotic War. People say that during her life and even after death, she performed many miracles.
Once, relatives of a seriously ill person came to Matron. He could not walk and could hardly recognize loved ones. People with tears in their eyes asked the old woman to help. She ordered the patient to get up early in the morning and crawl to her himself, without assistance. Of course, people were very surprised and became indignant: how can a disabled person crawl to her from another village ?!
They left, but Matrona's words passed on to him. The man got up in the morning and crawled along the road. Gradually, he got up and, without assistance, reached the house of Matron with his own feet.
There were a lot of such cases. People began to come from other villages to bow to the blessed. For help, she was thanked for the products that Matron fed her family.
Miracles of St. Matron after death
After the death of Matron continues to work miracles. People turn to her with various troubles. These are health problems, and conflicts in the family, and difficulties with work. Matronushka helps women give birth to a healthy baby when doctors unanimously say about infertility.
Pilgrims from all over Russia come to the Holy Protection Monastery - Matron is waiting for everyone who is ready to open his heart to faith. People stand in long lines, sometimes even in the cold. Matronushka fulfills the prayers of her. It is only necessary to defend a long line without any deception.
