Lyrical mood. Characteristics and features of the genre

Lyrics. How often do we hear this word, which we associate with love experiences! The lyrics are both quiet sadness, illuminated by a wonderful feeling, and sweet pain in anticipation of something unknown! The name “lyric poetry” itself comes from the Greek λυρικός, that is, “sensual and sounding to the accompaniment of the lyre”.

Characteristics

These works are full of feelings.

The lyrics are one of the literary genres that conveys the personal experiences and moods of the author himself. The following explanations of lyricism can be found in Russian explanatory dictionaries. It:

  1. Refinement of the soul as an emotional source, as well as softness and sensitivity of experiences (according to Ozhegov).
  2. Heartiness and poetic mood, the purpose of which is to excite the soul (according to Ephraim).
  3. Lyrical mood is poetry, reflecting the subjective experiences and feelings of its creator (according to Rat).

Manner of presentation

In lyrical works, the essence of constructing the character of the protagonist is based on emotions and feelings. That is, if the foundation of a dramatic story is based on difficult relationships with others during the course of life, then the role of the main character becomes an image-experience. Moreover, his emotions go beyond the personality of the writer himself and acquire social significance, without losing autobiography.

The lyrical mood is rightfully an aesthetically important experience that comes from the depths of the author’s soul, which gives each of us the opportunity to see a reflection of our own feelings in his creations. Even if the poet has not experienced the described feelings in reality, this in no way affects the sensibility of perception, since the experiences are quite real.

It is customary to look at the lyrics as the author’s enthusiasm for their own inner world, therefore this manner of presentation is often called “creative confession” or “self-disclosure”. And these are quite appropriate terms.

What directions can be attributed to the lyrics?

Autumn is a time of sadness

Since this genre is based on the ability of the reader (singer) to convey the described emotions through the voice, the pronunciation of each word should be confirmed by intonation, a meaningful pause and rhyme. The lyrics can include such directions as:

  • Oh yeah;
  • elegy;
  • romance;
  • dedication
  • message;
  • idyll;
  • epigram.

Throughout the work, we can track how the mood of the lyrical hero changes during the narration. What distinguishes them from epic creations is that they are always written in the present tense, so it is useless to ask the question: “How did it all end?” A lyric poem is an instant from a person’s life that occurs here and now, and, reading, we involuntarily imagine ourselves in the place of the main character, plunging headlong into the ocean of other people's feelings.
