Temples of Stavropol. St. Andrew's Cathedral

Special veneration in the southern cities of Russia enjoys St. Andrew the First-Called. It is believed that it was here that his missionary work began. In honor of him, many temples were built here at different times. One of them is St. Andrew's Cathedral in Stavropol.

Temple foundation

St. Andrew's Cathedral in Stavropol was built at the end of the nineteenth century according to the project of architect Kuskov. There was a temple in its place, but it was a small wooden church. St. Andrew's Cathedral in Stavropol was lit in 1897. The walls and ceiling were painted by the icon painter known at that time. A gilded iconostasis was installed inside.

Temple closure

A little more than 30 years, divine services were held in St. Andrew's Cathedral. In Stavropol after the revolution, the great honor of churches was closed. The temple built in honor of St. Andrew the First-Called was also closed. In its walls in the thirties there was an archive.

In 1942, Stavropol was occupied by German and Romanian troops. Oddly enough, it was during this period that St. Andrew's Cathedral was reopened. Divine services resumed thanks to the efforts of the Orthodox Romanians. After the liberation of the city, the cathedral was not closed. Its doors are open for Orthodox residents of Stavropol, as well as guests of this sunny city to this day.

The temple is completely updated. Nothing remains of the former decoration. However, after restoration work, it looks no worse than at the end of the 19th century. Parishioners especially venerate the icon “Satisfy My Sorrows”, written in Athos. A particle of the relics of the saint was invested in it, in whose honor the temple was erected.

A bell tower has recently been built where a bell weighing three tons is installed. Another is located at the entrance to the temple. The smaller bell was brought from Grozny and installed in memory of the victims of the Chechen war.
