Renault 19: over one hundred modifications over the years of release

The French automobile company Renault has several dozens of first-class models, from compact compact cars to large executive class limos. Some cars stand out from the general lineup, due to their extraordinary technical characteristics, as well as the exclusivity of the exterior design. These vehicles include Renault 19, the release of which began in 1988.

The car immediately confidently took its place in the European market in several versions. First of all, it was two hatchbacks, a five-door with five seats and a three-door with four seats. Behind them was a 5-seater four-door sedan, and the two-door convertible with two rows of seats closed this model chain. Renault 19 was produced at several plants in France, Turkey and Latin America. Renault's policy in the early nineties was aimed at a wide buyer. The task of the directorate was to produce large batches of automobiles of such quality that no buyer could resist. And this task was successfully completed. Renault 19 was an impeccable machine, easy to drive, with a high level of comfort, economical and maneuverable.

The sellers tried to maintain the price within mass availability. This was possible due to the low cost of basic units and the relatively inexpensive configuration of the car. Low prices for components, components and assemblies, as well as low-cost assembly at Latin American factories, made it possible to repeatedly modify Renault 19, the photos we see on the page, improving the design and improving the basic indicators of the chassis, engine and transmission. The car became the standard in its class, the technical characteristics were already becoming excessive, when the middle class car could no longer be improved, its parameters reached their limit. However, the Renault design bureaus still found application of high engineering.

A unique system of emergency absorption of the kinetic shift of the engine and the entire metal mass located in the engine compartment was created. In the new format, the engine with the gearbox was mounted on a special frame from a channel profile, which in turn was mounted on the side members of the base frame. The design in a head-on collision took a blow upon itself, the inertia was extinguished and the engine no longer entered the passenger compartment, as was the case with conventional cars. Thus, Renault 19 became the most safety-related car of its time, in conventional terms. Otherwise, the passive safety of the car was also at a fairly high level, four emergency airbags protected the driver and passenger in the front seat from injuries, and the rear seat was equipped with effective seat belts with an inertial lock that withstood any tension.

The number of modifications that were made by Renault 19 over the years of production, simply can not be counted. But it is reliably known that there were more than a hundred of them. The most significant and notable development was the modification of Renault 19 Europe, released at an automobile factory in Turkey. Some basic modifications lasted until the end of production in 1995, when Renault Megane replaced Renault 19 . On the main conveyors, Renault 19 production ceased, but the car was assembled at peripheral plants for another 7 years, until 2002.
