The writing of any scientific work, whether it is a term paper, a diploma, a master's degree or a dissertation, always ends with its defense before the expert commission and those present who are interested in the topic and problems.
Writing a diploma thesis is a multi-stage and time-consuming process that requires competence from the researcher. One of the most important stages is preparation for the finale - the defense of the work, in which the author must present a report, presentation and handout for the diploma.
For an effective and memorable performance, you must:
- prepare a competent speech ;
- choose the optimal manner of oral presentation. Text written in a scientific style will not always be well heard;
- prepare handouts that help those present understand the topic, it is easier to perceive all kinds of data.
Scientific results in most cases suggest the presence of quantitative indicators, graphic drawings, systematic tables. Handout is an illustrative display of the main stages and conclusions of a research project, designed to facilitate understanding, interest of listeners and cause discussion.
A presentation created in any graphic editor, for broadcasting it on the projector during protection, can be duplicated in paper form. Such handouts are offered to the members of the commission for their convenience.
Functionality and advantages of illustrative cards:
- each person can individually consider the data;
- those present determine for themselves the necessary time to study the information that the handout contains;
- it is possible during the speakerโs speech and discussion to repeatedly return to a particular drawing, table, diagram and formulate questions;
- interested participants in the discussion can take with them handout material for further detailed acquaintance with it.
In contrast to the above, the presentation in electronic form is sequential and has a clear time for holding one frame on the projector.
How to pay attention to the handout?
The rapporteur must take care that the prepared additional material is not left without attention. If the listeners simply lay out the illustrations on the tables and do not mention them, then probably they will remain untouched.
The report recommends focusing the audience on a particular slide.
Using introductory phrases in the right places according to the text of the report will help to emphasize and captivate people.
For example:
- "... in table 3 you can see these results ...";
- "... in illustration 2.2 what was said by us is more clearly demonstrated ...";
- "... if you study the data of slide 5, then it will become clear to you that ...";
- "... read the diagram in the 6th illustration, which confirms the announced results of our diploma research."
Such appeals during the report will help those present to understand what part of it corresponds to a fragment of the handout.
