The first mention of Kostroma is found in documents of 1213. According to archaeological research, the first settlers were Finno-Ugric tribes. Later, Slavs who came from the south appeared here.
According to V. Tatishchev, the year of foundation of Kostroma is considered to be 1152.
In 1364, the city became part of the Moscow Principality.
In 1419, the Kremlin was erected on an elevated site. A remarkable fact is that in the Ipatiev Monastery of Kostroma Mikhail Romanov was elected king.
The Time of Troubles ended, and the city began to grow rapidly, moving to third place after Moscow and Yaroslavl.
In 1796, during the reign of Emperor Paul I, Kostroma became a provincial city.
Today it is a developed regional center, a large river port on the Volga.

Holy Trinity Ipatiev Monastery
The founder of the monastery is considered a noble Tatar - Murza Chet, who was baptized into Orthodoxy with the name of Zachariah. He was the ancestor of the Boris Godunov clan. The first stone structure, Trinity Cathedral, was built in 1560. Here in March 1613 the name of the new tsar - Mikhail Romanov was named.
The monastery was little known, but after the rise of Boris Godunov, the life of the monastery changed. In the Ipatiev Monastery, all the ancestors of Tsar Boris were buried, starting with the Cheta-Zakharia.
In the year of the centenary of the Romanov dynasty, Kostroma and the Ipatiev Monastery were the main place of celebration.
Immediately after the revolution, the monastery was closed. In 1922, all objects of worship that were of value were confiscated.
The revival of the monastery began in 1989. On November 23, the first prayer service was held at Trinity Cathedral.

Epiphany Monastery
The monastery was founded in 1426 near the Kremlin. The founder of the monastery is Rev. Nikita, a student of Sergius of Radonezh.
The first stone building - the Epiphany Cathedral, was built in 1565. A model for builders was the Assumption Cathedral in Moscow.

Church of the Resurrection of Christ on Debra
This ancient architectural monument and the most beautiful temple of Kostroma was erected in the XVII century. But even earlier, in the XIII century, the Church of the Resurrection of Christ stood here.
The Stone Temple of the Resurrection was built with the money of the rich merchant Kirill Isakov.
In the future, the church was rebuilt many times, but retained its original appearance and the extraordinary beauty of architecture.
After the revolution, the temple remained operational until the onset of the 30s. After the closure, a granary was placed in it.
After the war, the attitude towards the church became different, and services were resumed in the church. In the 60s, it was already a cathedral.
Today in Kostroma the Resurrection Church attracts pilgrims and tourists, it contains shrines and particles of the relics of saints - Ilya Muromets, Damian Celebnik and others.

Church of John Chrysostom
The stone temple was erected in the XVIII century on the site of wooden churches built in the XVII century. One consecrated in honor of the martyrs Flora and Laurus, the other, summer, bears the name of John Chrysostom.
In Kostroma, churches were often built on donations from parishioners. So this temple was built with the money of the merchant Arawin.
The shrine is stored in the temple - the Polonsky icon of the Mother of God. There is a legend that once this icon appeared to a local resident when he was in Turkish captivity, and through his fervent prayers she miraculously transferred it to her homeland.
Church of Alexy, Man of God
Alexey, the Man of God is a Christian saint, revered by both Orthodox and Catholic churches. He lived in the IV century, led an ascetic lifestyle.
In 1653, a church in honor of the saint was built on the farmstead of the Epiphany convent. Money for the construction was collected by the parishioners in the form of donations.
Today, excursions are held in the Temple, a Sunday school operates, and social work is conducted. Every day services are performed. The liturgy begins at 9:00, evening service - at 17:00.
Church of the Savior in the Rows
The peculiarity of this church is that it is located not in the architectural ensemble of temple buildings, but among the merchant trading rows.
In this trading place in the XVII century there was a wooden church, the temple was erected and consecrated in 1776. In the future, the church continued to be completed.
After the revolution, the museum of atheism was located in the building, later - warehouses. The building acquired its former appearance only in the 80s.
