Holy Cross Exaltation Cathedral: Petrozavodsk

Once upon a time, a small wooden chapel was built in this cemetery, which was dismantled in 1800 and a year later a church was built in its place, the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. By 1847, due to the dilapidation of the entire structure, it was forced to rebuild thoroughly again. And with the blessing of Archbishop Benedict, the foundation was laid for the construction of a new temple.

The construction was led by architect V.V. Tukhtarov. The cathedral was built at the expense of the townspeople, but the main sum from its treasury was allocated to the temple by the merchant patron Mark Pimenov. The merchant Abramov first arranged a second throne in honor of the Ascension Day of the Lord, and then attached stone compartments for the sacristy and archive.

Times of hard times

In 1896, the Holy Cross Cathedral of Petrozavodsk opened its own small parish school. After the revolution, during the period of renovationism from 1924 to 1935, the bishop of the Renovationists Alexander (Nadezhdin) served here, who moved his department here, and from that moment the temple began to be called the cathedral.

In the late 30s, all the clergy of the church were arrested, along with them the rector of the church, Archpriest John Pavlov, who was then shot in December 1937. Divine services began to take place in a secular rite with prayers without priests and the Eucharist.

In the summer of 1941 the Holy Cross Cathedral of Petrozavodsk was officially closed. After the Nazi occupation in 1944, the cathedral was fixed to the believers as actually acting.

From the 1930s to the 1980s, the cathedral was one of two operating in the city's okrug. Between 1990 and 2000 an independent diocese was restored, and the department of the bishop of Petrozavodsk Manuel began to be located in the cathedral. In 2006, restoration work was carried out in the church.
