Everyone probably knows the advertising slogan of popular sweets “Milk is doubly tastier if it’s Milky Way.” And sweet tooth, most likely, already salivated. Are these sweets really made from real milk? Or do they owe their delicate taste other ingredients? To find out what makes sweets so attractive for gourmets, together we read the composition of Milky Way and understand its intricacies.
What kind of candy is this?
Initially, Milky Way is a chocolate bar with a delicate filling of soft nougat with a vanilla flavor. Their release began in 1923 by the American confectionery company "Mars". In Russia, they appeared much later and in a slightly different variation than in their own homeland. So, as part of Milky Way for our compatriots, as well as for Europeans, there is no caramel, and the dense chocolate nougat (as in the Mars bar) is replaced by light vanilla.
Despite the difference from the original recipe, the bars have become very popular in Russia and European countries. In this regard, the product range has expanded - now in stores you can find not only bars, but also Milky Way candies. The composition, and accordingly the taste, is identical.
The advertisement is engine of the trade
The name of the bar "Milky Way" is translated from English as the "Milky Way", it corresponds to a dark blue packaging with a white ring, in which the name is written. The brand's slogan is "Milk is doubly tastier if it's Milky Way." The authors of the advertising campaign did not fail, because milk is so useful, so many parents make their children drink it, and kids so often do not like it.
Naturally, a product that is twice as tasty as milk milk, but at the same time supposedly possessing all its useful properties, will attract buyers. By the way, in order to prove that Milky Way has exclusively milk, the authors of the advertisement decided to immerse the bar in a glass with this useful drink ... The candy didn’t sink because it was “made from real milk”, the same as poured in a glass.
MythBusters
But it will not be so naive and will not be carried on by advertising tricks. We’ll better check what the composition of Milky Way sweets is in person. No, we will not conduct laboratory analysis, since by law reliable information about its composition must be indicated on the product label.
Mars Corporation is one of the leading manufacturers of confectionery products in the world market; therefore, they value their reputation, which means that they comply with all norms and requirements for products. Based on this, we believe that reading the composition of the Milky Way product on the wrapper of the bar will be enough.
From what, from what .....
So, the main ingredients of sweets (they always come first) are sugar and glucose syrup, and not milk at all, as we would like, although whole and non-fat dry - it is still present in the composition of the filling. Also, to prepare a gentle souffle, use vegetable fat and dry egg white.
As a water-retaining component is used to make Milky Way malt extract, it also does not spoil the candy longer (this is an absolutely natural ingredient, so you should not worry about its presence in the product). In addition, a little salt is added to the filling, as well as vanillin - this gives it a characteristic aroma of sweetness.
Of course, in addition to the filling, Milky Way is also part of chocolate. Dairy - one in which the dry residue of cocoa contains at least twenty-seven percent, and dry milk products - at least twenty percent. And in which, alas, a lot of sugar.
The nutritional value
Of course, such a large amount of sugar in the composition of the product affects its nutritional value. One hundred grams of the product contains 450 kilocalories, which means that a standard bar weighing 26 grams is 117 kcal, that is, five percent of the daily intake of an adult, and a small eleven-gram sweetie is fifty kcal (two percent). At the same time, for every hundred grams of sweets, 72.3 grams of carbohydrates are necessary, of which 67 grams is sugar. Agree, it’s better not to overdo it with the Milky Way bar. Fats, including saturated fats, per hundred grams of the product account for 16.3 grams, which is also a lot. But protein, unlike whole milk, is not rich in chocolate - only 3.2 grams per 100 grams.
So, Milky Way is a delicious, delicate delicacy that really contains milk, but in such insignificant quantities that all its benefits are killed by a huge amount of sugar, which is contained in candy. The rest of the composition of “Milky Way” did not cause any complaints.
