SR-3 "Whirlwind" - a small-sized machine developed by specialists of the Klimovsky enterprise TSNIITOCHMASH in 1994. Refinement of the image was carried out until 1996, when the production of weapons was put on the conveyor.
Development history
At the end of the 80s, the state security service employees needed a new compact model of small arms, which would open up the possibility of holding military actions in cramped conditions. Another condition was the ability to effectively defeat opponents dressed in body armor.
In the 90s, an order for the manufacture of weapons was accepted by domestic designers V.N. Levchenko and A.D. Borisov, who worked on the development of new types of weapons in Klimovsk near Moscow. Very soon, the inventors presented a shortened, almost silent version of the machine, created on the basis of the popular AS “Val” model. The new sample was intended for firing with cartridges of caliber 9 mm armor-piercing series SP-6.
After several years of testing weapons, FSB officers officially adopted the model. For its high rate of fire and compactness, the machine was called SR-3 "Whirlwind". Later, a modification of the model was developed, which received the designation CP3M. The latter retained the main advantages of the previous version and opened up wide opportunities for additional equipment with advanced detachable optics, compact collimator sights.

The use of the latter allows you to hit opponents, the body of which is protected by class 5 bulletproof vests. At the same time, the penetration ability is realized at a distance of up to 50 m. As for bulletproof vests of the 1st protection class, here the lethal force remains at a distance of 500 m or more.
Design features
The design of the SR-3 "Whirlwind" largely repeats the assembly features of its prototype - the AS Val model. Gas exhaust automation has been successfully implemented here. The barrel is locked using a shutter for 6 combat stops. The design of the drummer is also performed in a manner similar to the basic version of the machine. All this opens up the possibility for firing shots in both continuous and single bursts.
SR-3 “Whirlwind” has a separate translator and fuse. The first is located behind the trigger. As for the double-sided fuse, the element is located on the receiver.
Replacing the shutter handle in the design of the machine are several engines that are mounted above the forearm. The latter are pulled in manually using fingers.
The butt of the machine is folded up and then forward. Made element of lightweight stamped steel. The forearm and the handle of the automatic weapon are made of high-strength plastic that can withstand increased shock loads.
Trunk
Compared with the base model, the SR-3 Vortex machine does not contain holes in the barrel for exhaust gas removal during firing in long bursts. The developers also did not provide for the possibility of completing the machine with a silencer. However, the barrel is equipped with a compensatory flame arrester, which protects the weapon from overheating of the barrel during firing bursts.
The rifling of the barrel is implemented with variable slope. This solution allowed to significantly increase the accuracy of firing and stabilize the stability of the flight path of the cartridges.
Sights
In the basic assembly, the machine is equipped with a sighting device in the form of a front sight located in the front of the case. The weapon is equipped with a two-position rear sight switch of the cross over type, which is located on the receiver cover. If necessary, the SR-3 "Whirlwind" can be supplemented with a collimator sight.
Modification
The main variation of the SR-3 "Whirlwind" machine is the CP-3M model. The machine differs from the base sample by the presence of a cocking handle located on the right side of the bolt frame. The safety element is also located on the right side of the housing.
Butt CP-3M has a lightweight, skeletal design. It conveniently folds to the side with secretive weapon transport. The forend contains an additional built-in handle, which allows you to securely fix the weapon in your hands while firing in long bursts.
The left side of the receiver contains mounts for mounting a specialized bracket, which makes it possible to equip weapons with night vision devices and sighting optics. On the muzzle there is a clutch where a quick-release muffler is connected.
The SR-3M model can be operated with metal magazines with a capacity of 30 rounds and 10 or 20-charge rounds made of plastic.

Currently, the model is one of the most common, widely sought-after models of automatic weapons around the world. The development has been successfully used not only by domestic law enforcement agencies, but also by paramilitary structures of Western countries.
