The Soviet truck MAZ 500, the photo of which is presented on the page, was created in 1965 at an automobile plant in Minsk. The new model and its predecessor differ in the location of the engine, which is located in the lower part of the cab. This arrangement allowed to reduce the weight of the car and at the same time increase its carrying capacity by 500 kilograms.
Story
The base model was the onboard MAZ 500 with a wooden body. The car's carrying capacity was 7.5 tons, thanks to a 180-horsepower engine the car could easily tow a trailer weighing 12 tons.
The new “five hundredth” family made up the model range of the following modifications: the MAZ 500 dump truck , the 505 truck tractor , the 509 timber truck, and the 500Sh universal chassis.
In 1970, the new MAZ 500A car rolled off the assembly line with an extended wheelbase and a payload capacity of up to 8 tons. The overall dimensions of the truck have been optimized in accordance with European standards. The direct gear ratio was reduced, the speed of the car increased to 90 kilometers per hour.
"MAZ 500", the photo of which allows you to appreciate the new design of the second-generation car, is worthy of modernity. A noticeable difference is the characteristic radiator grille, consisting of eight rectangular air intakes.
MAZ 500A was produced for seven years, until September 1977, after which it was replaced by a new series - MAZ 5335.
The YaMZ-236 diesel engine, which was installed on the MAZ 500, could operate without electrical equipment. This advantage was used by the military, who ordered the "500th" in large quantities for the needs of the USSR Armed Forces. Steering with a hydraulic booster also did not need electric power. The brake system was supplied with compressed air from the receiver, which, in turn, was filled with a constantly running compressor. No one was bothered by the lack of all-wheel drive "MAZ 500", the characteristics of the machine and the engine power reserve were impressive.
