Today, the building materials market offers a huge number of different materials for waterproofing and roofing. The main requirements for such products are low price, high quality and, most importantly, durability. And the most suitable material that meets all these requirements may be glass insulation, whose technical characteristics allow to achieve high quality roofing and waterproofing.
Distinctive features
Service life - more than 10 years, high quality and low cost in comparison with analogues - all this is glassisol. Its application is very wide and applies to all areas of construction, from residential buildings to engineering structures. The material is available in the form of rolls, which simplifies the work with it.
Marking and characteristics of various types
Depending on the application of this or that type of fiberglass cloth for the production of glassisol, the final product is divided into four main types:
- Stekloizol KhPP serves as a laying in a roofing carpet, it is based on the use of fiberglass.
- Stekloizol TPP is also used as a gasket, but, unlike the previous type, it is more durable, since fiberglass is used for its production.
- Glassware HKP is used as a covering of a roofing carpet and consists of fiberglass, a bitumen-polymer layer and sprinkling in the form of granite chips.
- With tekloizol TKP is also used as a coating, but is made on the basis of fiberglass, which gives additional strength.
In this marking, the first letters reflect the base material: X - fiberglass, T - fiberglass. The next letter indicates the scope: P - cushioning material, K - the top layer of the roofing. And also at the end of the lettering may be a numerical designation indicating the weight of one square meter of material.
For example, glass PPI HPP 2, 5, the characteristics are as follows: glass fiber insulation based on fiberglass, weighing 2.5 kilograms per 1 square meter of material. It is worth noting that this type is most often used for the device of the cushioning layer, due to its light weight, rather high tensile strength and the optimal combination of price and quality.
Stekloizol: technical characteristics
Stekloizol is a bitumen-roofing material with excellent waterproofing properties and low price in comparison with materials of the same purpose. It is mainly used for installing soft roofs. Strong enough, but at the same time flexible and elastic, this material is waterproof and resistant to temperature extremes.
Unlike the roofing material similar to it, stekloizol is made using fiberglass or fiberglass as a base, on which a bitumen mixture with special additives is applied on both sides. The use of more durable base material has increased the strength and durability of the material.
Stekloizol: application in construction
Waterproofing the floor in underground garages, use in the installation of suspended gardens, protection of foundations from corrosion and dampness, and even use in the creation of flat exploited roofs - all of these construction activities use glass insulation of various grades. It can be concluded that this material has almost unlimited versatility and, using it, it is possible to achieve a high degree of protection against moisture and moisture.
It is worth paying attention to only one minus glassisol: when a flat roof is made from this material, atmospheric precipitation can accumulate on it. To prevent water from seeping through the roofing carpet from glass, it is worth paying attention to sealing the joints between the sheets.
Roofing glass
Stekloizol HKP, the technical characteristics of which do not differ much from those of stekloizol KhPP, requires more detailed consideration. Unlike cushioning, the roofing material is characterized by greater thickness and strength, as well as the presence of a coating layer of fine granite chips. It has excellent performance and is a rolled bitumen material based on fiberglass.
For additional protection against moisture, a layer of polymer film is applied to the lower surface of the bitumen, which also allows for laying work in a shorter time.
The use of roofing material
For the installation of a soft roof, you can use stekloizol. Technical characteristics allow it to be used for roofing with a slope of less than 8 degrees and any base for coating, which can be concrete, wood or consist of metal corrugated board. Such a roof has a number of advantages, such as ease of installation, profitability, the ability to install equipment such as antennas, and the possibility of installing an exploited roof.
Stacking glass
How to prepare a surface for glass insulation, how to lay it, what techniques and methods exist? All these questions arise when choosing glassizol as a roofing material. The technological process of laying is simple, but requires some knowledge of the sequence of work performed. The whole process can be decomposed into three stages:
- The first step involves preparing the surface for laying, which should be clean and as dry as possible.
- At the second stage, it is necessary to spread the roll on the surface for laying and allow it to straighten. Then, glass isol is cut into the required-sized canvases.
- The third stage includes heating the web with a propane torch or blowtorch and gluing to the surface. For more reliable bonding of the canvas with the surface, it can be rolled with a roller.
To prevent water from seeping through the seams, the canvas is laid with an overlap of 10 centimeters and warmed up separately. This allows you to achieve the integrity of the roof carpet and will create a high-quality layer of waterproofing.
Before starting work, it is necessary to carefully study the instructions for use, since each type of glassisol has a different operating temperature. In winter, the rolls must be kept in a warm room for at least a day until the material is completely heated. Glass insulation, the technical characteristics of which allow to work with it at a minimum permissible air temperature of -10 degrees Celsius, should not be frozen. This will lead to cracking of the bitumen layer and weakening of the waterproofing properties.
Now consider the sequence of work in more detail. For high-quality styling, you will need the following tools: a propane burner or blowtorch, primer, trowel, roofing knife, a mop for roofing works.
If the glass isol is laid on a layer of the old roof, then it is necessary to clean it from dust, debris and, if necessary, repair and level it. If the glass isol is laid on a concrete surface, then it is necessary to pre-treat the surface with a primer solution using a roofing mop. Next, the glass-roll roll unfolds and tries on. For cutting the canvas, a roofing knife is used.
The next step is heating and gluing the canvas to the base with a gas burner. First, the edge of the roll is glued, and then, holding the burner at a distance of 15-20 centimeters from the canvas, bitumen and the base of the roof are heated. In this case, the roll is gradually unwound and pressed to the base. Compliance with an overlap of 10 centimeters is very important for creating a high-quality roof, so you should pay attention to this.
After completing all the above work, you need to warm up each seam again and test for leaks using a trowel.
Use of glassizol in winter
How to cover the roof of the garage with glassizol in the cold season? It is worth considering some mandatory working conditions in such conditions. Is it possible to use glassisol in winter?
Reviews of experts indicate the absolute possibility of working with this material even in the cold season without loss of quality. Stekloizol can be used at low temperatures, but all manipulations are recommended to be performed under a stream of air heated by a heat gun.
To create a warm, non-leaking garage roof, it is worth taking care of the device of the heat-insulating layer between the bars of the crate and the roofing carpet of glass. Mineral wool or polystyrene foam boards can be used as insulation. When using any insulation, it is necessary to leave a ventilation gap between it and glass insulation. This will prevent the accumulation of moisture under the roof layers.
Further installation of glass insulation on the surface of the roof of the garage is carried out in the same way as at positive air temperature, only taking into account the above-described air heating.
For a very long time, as a roofing material for coating garages, outbuildings, baths, houses, etc., glass insulation has been used, reviews of the quality and durability of which make it one of the first places among waterproofing materials.
