A rubber cuff, or oil seal, is a ring-shaped rubber product designed to connect parts of mechanisms. Rubber rings differ in their configuration and are mounted on parts and mechanisms of a cylindrical shape. They prevent the penetration of liquids, lubricants and gases into the low-pressure region from the high-pressure regions. Design features, shapes and technical properties of the cuffs are determined by the scope of their use.
Rubber reinforced cuffs
Reinforced oil seals are designed to seal a variety of shafts that work in mineral oils and lubricants based on such oils, as well as in water and diesel fuel, where the pressure level does not exceed 0.05 MPa and a speed of 20 m / s at temperatures from - 45 degrees to +100 degrees.

Glands are of two types, one of which includes a single-edged rubber cuff without anther, and the second with anther. Cuffs without anther prevent leakage of the medium being sealed, and with anther they also protect against dust. Lip seals are made in two ways - by machining and by molding. All cuffs must be marked. The type of stuffing box is indicated on the marking, where index 1 will indicate that the product is without anther, and 2 - with anther. Next, the packing method is indicated: index 1 means that the edge is obtained mechanically, and index 2 means that the edge is molded. The next figure is the diameter of the shaft, followed by the outer diameter of the gland itself and, finally, its height. All these values ββare indicated in millimeters. For example, 1.2-60x1080x10.

Reinforced rubber cuffs can be made of elastomer and its mixtures, nitrile butadiene, silicone and other types of rubber or polyurethane. Features of the production of these products depend on the scope of their application, for example, in the automotive industry, mechanical engineering, in the aviation industry and other fields.
Types of rubber for making cuffs
As already mentioned, this or that rubber cuff is intended for use in a certain field, and in this regard, the material for their manufacture is used differently. All types of rubbers have individual characteristics and are divided into groups.
Group number | Rubber characteristic | Operating temperature (Β° ) |
one | Oil and petrol resistant | -45 ... + 100 |
2 | Oil and petrol resistant | -30 ... + 100 |
3 | Oil and petrol resistant | -60 ... + 100 |
four | Heat resistant, oil and petrol resistant and resistant to aggressive environments | -45 ... + 150 |
5 | Heat resistant, oil and petrol resistant and resistant to aggressive environments | -20 ... + 170 |
6 | Heat resistant | -55 ... + 150 |
Plumbing rubber cuffs
Currently, it is impossible to imagine a single connection in plumbing without the use of various rubber products. The rubber cuff sanitary can be made of different materials: from rubber, rubber, paronite or silicone. Cuffs provide a tight connection of the bell-shaped sections of sewer pipes of different diameters with any plumbing. In addition, with the help of them, hoses and corrugated hoses of various diameters are connected to sewer pipes.
