Gubkin University of Oil and Gas

Gubkin I.M.

The modern university, which attracts many students from all over the world and is the main forge of personnel in the oil and gas industry, was created on the basis of the oil industry faculty of the Moscow Mining Academy, which was opened in 1918. In 1920, Ivan Gubkin was taken as a professor at the Mining Academy. After two years of hard work, Ivan Mikhailovich was appointed rector of the Academy. Since that time, the formation of the university begins, which guaranteed the acquisition of professional oil education.

After some time, the Soviet Union entered the first five-year period, which entailed the rapid industrial development of all sectors of the economy. Against this background, the oil and gas industry faced its main problem - the lack of qualified personnel capable of industrial production and processing of hydrocarbon raw materials. In this regard, Ivan Mikhailovich took up the reorganization of the Mining Academy and the construction of a branch university on its basis. On April 17, 1930, a decision was made to create six technical-related educational institutions headed by the Moscow Petroleum Institute. The educational institution of the highest category was given the name of Ivan Mikhailovich Gubkin, for the contribution of an outstanding scientist to the development of public oil and gas education. He also became the first director of the institute.

The first basic faculties were:

  • Faculty of Geological Exploration and Development of Oil Fields;
  • Faculty of Mechanics;
  • Faculty of Fossil Oil Refining.

In May of that year, another faculty was opened, which to this day is the main one in the oil and gas business - the faculty of industrial economics.

In order to justify the full significance of the University of Oil and Gas, the most outstanding scientists were involved in the work, and a design and research bureau was opened in 1931 to coordinate work on the development of hydrocarbon deposits.

Since 1934, the Gubkin University of Oil and Gas has begun active work on the development of the Ural-Volga fields: progressive methods of drilling oil wells are being developed, work is underway to increase the oil recovery coefficient, new facilities for processing black gold are being built, etc.

For a short time of work (10 years), the university gave the country 1,436 highly qualified specialists, and by the beginning of the Second World War the institute had: 29 departments, sixteen scientific laboratories, 26 equipped training rooms, a library with a huge amount of scientific literature, a training rig in the courtyard of the institute .
