Features of the phase sensor VAZ-2114 and do-it-yourself replacement

The phase sensor on the VAZ-2114 is used to adjust the ignition timing and the moment of fuel injection. With it, the electronic engine control unit removes information about the speed of the camshaft. The second name of the device is a camshaft sensor. For the first time on VAZ-2114 cars it was started to be used in 2007, before that the control system functioned with one crankshaft rotation sensor. But the use of an additional device allows to achieve maximum power and minimum fuel consumption.

Phase Sensor Features

The device is installed opposite the camshaft gear. There is no one tooth on it - it is with the help of such a simple feature that it is possible to fix the rotation frequency. The phase sensor operates thanks to the Hall effect, like a similar device in non-contact type ignition distributors. A signal is sent from the sensor to the input of the electronic control unit - there is a conversion and selection of operating parameters.

All actuators begin to work strictly according to the fuel card stored in the memory of the control unit. In the event of a breakdown of the phase sensor on the VAZ-2114, there is a transition to operation in emergency mode - only signals from the device mounted on the crankshaft are used. At the same time, engine efficiency and power are reduced, gas mileage is increased.

Why the sensor breaks

If errors of the phase sensor VAZ-2114 (P0343 or P0340) appear, you need to check its performance. The first is a visual inspection for mechanical damage. The second is to check all power and control circuits. The fourteenth phase sensor fails for the following reasons:

1. A short circuit appears in the inside of the instrument circuit.
2. The destruction of the gear located on the camshaft of the engine occurred.
3. There were mechanical damages on the eyes for mounting the sensor, as a result of this the body shifts and leaves the coverage area.
4. Damage due to engine overheating.

To identify most of the damage, just visually inspect the device. But in some cases, a multimeter is required - this is quite enough to carry out system diagnostics.

Signs of damage

An unambiguous diagnosis can be made if a diagnosis is made. Many signs of a malfunction of the VAZ-2114 phase sensor are also characteristic for breakdowns of other nodes. Here are the main ones:

1. The increase in gas mileage.
2. Deterioration of dynamics, acceleration of the car becomes "sluggish".
3. Engine idling is accompanied by dips.
4. Unstable idling - “triple” the motor.
5. Errors appear on the on-board computer monitor, which indicate the presence of breakdowns in the phase sensor and the transition of the electronic control unit to emergency mode.

As mentioned earlier, the emergency mode is characterized in that the entire operation of the system occurs solely on data from the sensor on the crankshaft.

In this mode, it is impossible to carry out phased injection of the fuel mixture, only it turns out to be paired. As a result, there is a strong excessive consumption of fuel and a decrease in the dynamic characteristics of the car. It is impossible to repair the sensor, only a complete replacement will help. The cost of a new device in stores is about 500 rubles.

Sensor Diagnostics

Before replacing the phase sensor on the VAZ-2114, it is necessary to diagnose the old one. It is possible that the cause of the breakdown lies in the wires connecting it to the electronic control unit. Engines with 8 or 16 valves are installed on VAZ-2114 vehicles. Sensors are also used different.

For diagnostics, you only need a multimeter. The procedure for checking the sensor on the V8 motor looks like this:

1. Measure the voltage at the sensor signal output. To do this, apply power to it - connect it to the “E” terminal. Pin “B” should have a voltage of 0.9 V.
2. Bring a metal object to the active element of the device. In the event that the sensor is serviceable, the voltage will drop to 0.4 V. Otherwise, there is an internal breakdown.

On V16 engines, the diagnosis is slightly different - at the “B” terminal there should initially be a voltage of 0.4 V, and when exposed to a metal object, it rises to 0.9 V.

Replacement

The device is located on the right side of the motor, next to the air filter housing. Fastening is done with a single bolt. To replace the phase sensor on the VAZ-2114, it is necessary to disconnect the battery and disconnect the block.

Using a key of 10, you need to unscrew the bolt that secures the sensor, and then remove it. The new one is put in the reverse order. Be sure to clean all surfaces to which the device is adjacent - ingress of metal chips or dust can cause the sensor to stop working. After replacement, start the engine and check its operation - errors should disappear.
