Quartz primer: composition, purpose and instructions for use

Delicate facade plasters do not always have the properties sufficient for reliable laying on a problem base. And even if the target surface is quite โ€œfriendlyโ€ to such a design, experienced finishers advise increasing the reliability of the lining by laying the preparatory coating. In this quality, a quartz primer is optimal, acting on both the base and the finish layer from the back.

Primer Wall Decoration

This primer is also called concrete contact, which reflects its main function of providing adhesion to various substrates. The porous concrete surface just illustrates the problem of using plaster on such a basis. It is precisely on the tasks of providing a bond between the rough coating and the decorative layer that the primer with quartz filler is oriented, and putty and tile adhesive with a low adhesive function can be used as the finishing material. The same goes for the foundation. In addition to cement, unsatisfactory adhesion is famous for lime, wood and gypsum surfaces. In addition, a basic quartz-based primer not only increases the adhesion of materials, but also adds to the warming function, which is especially important in relation to facades.

The composition of the quartz primer

The material has a water-dispersed origin, supplemented with fine crystalline sand. It is allowed to use tinting and ready-made primer compositions, including latex and acrylic. Resistance to moisture is provided by the presence of composite synthetic inclusions, and resins and emulsifiers are responsible for the function of the bond. In turn, quartz sand for primer gives the coating a sufficient degree of roughness, so that decorative materials are held and cemented. Moreover, the sand is used fine and clean - before mixing it is subjected to multi-stage filtration. The result is a polymer composition with mineral additives and a sand filler, which is modified if necessary.

Material Performance

Each manufacturer in his family has several compositional variations that determine the functional qualities of the product. Among the most common operational properties characteristic of a quartz primer, the following can be distinguished:

  • Facilitation of the physical masonry of decorative plasters due to plasticity.
  • Improving adhesive properties at the coating site.
  • Accessibility to tinting (shade change).
  • Environmental Safety.
  • Vapor permeability.
  • Improving waterproofing.
  • The risk of translucent roughing through a decorative coating is eliminated, regardless of its light transmission.
  • Resistance to weathering.

Preparatory work

The primer can only be applied on a dry, cleaned, dust-free and degreased base. It should not have bitumen particles from the previous waterproofing and traces of limescale. All this can harm the positive qualities of the material. If a quartz primer is used for walls on the outside, it is necessary to eliminate possible chips. Such a surface should be thoroughly cleaned with abrasive materials and only then coated with a primer. Special attention is paid to fragile surface areas. Probable spalls, areas affected by the fungus or cracks are cleaned with metal brushes and removed. Further, the voids formed are completely sealed with a primer. In the case of deep cracks, jointing is performed with a possible filling with cement mortar. If there are signs of serious biological damage by mold or moss, then it is necessary to treat the surface with a special fungicidal agent, and then apply the stucco mixture. Only after it hardens and strengthens in strength can we proceed to the next stage.

Consumption and conditions of use of the solution

Application of quartz primer

The product is available in plastic containers (banks and buckets) with an average volume of 5-10 liters. Before use, the primer is mixed directly in the factory packaging. It is a thick, homogeneous liquid that does not require special preparation. It is desirable to store the mixture at a temperature of 5 to 35 ยฐ C, using the original packaging to ensure tightness. As for the application, the recommended consumption of quartz primer varies from 0.2 to 0.5 l / m 2 . The choice of volume will be determined including the absorbency of the target surface of the base. It is advisable to apply the material in dry conditions, at a temperature of 5 to 30 ยฐ C and a humidity coefficient of not more than 80%.

Chip surface primer

The material is applied with a paint brush, and the technique should be oriented on one pass without repetition. Align the mass with a neat, thin layer using a small spatula or trowel. Two limitations must be taken into account right away. In such works, dilution of the composition with water and the use of a roller are not allowed, since it makes the structure loose. Typical instructions for laying a quartz primer note that it takes about 3-3.5 hours to completely crystallize the structure. This time must be waited and then final cleaned. Its purpose is not to polish the surface (on the contrary, it should be slightly rough), but to remove pronounced defects. They are easy to clean with a metal grater.

Places that are not included in the target work area should be cleaned even before solidification immediately after completion of work. Fresh primer is easily washed off. By the way, in order not to have to perform unnecessary operations, it is recommended to seal the places along the edges of the working platform with masking tape. After laying the mixture, it is cleaned without any problems, leaving a smooth contour of the primed area.

Popular Manufacturers

Quartz primer Ceresite

The composition is relatively new in the domestic market, and yet he managed to gain fame not only in the circles of finishers, but also among ordinary homeowners. Recommended manufacturers of this product include:

  • Blis-contact. Composition on a water-dispersion basis with the addition of latex and acrylic. As noted in the reviews, the product is weather resistant and decorative. So, after drying, the applied layer acquires a soft pink hue, conveying the texture and finish, if it has a sufficient indicator of light transmission.
  • "Ceresite." One of the most famous companies in Russia specializing in the manufacture of building mixtures. The German company in this case offers a high-quality composition of CT-16, indicating the presence of additives in the form of copolymers and titanium dioxide. This modification has expanded the scope of the quartz primer "Ceresite", making it possible to lay it even on wood chipboards. On the other hand, the composition of CT-16 is characterized by one of the longest periods of solidification - about 5-6 hours.
  • Caparol Sylitol-Minera. This primer uses a special type of binder component - along with fine quartz sand, particles of liquid potassium glass are also introduced. As a result, this allows the mixture to be used not only as an adhesive primer, but also as a structural leveling putty for glaze surface preparation for painting.

Conclusion

Decorative properties of quartz primer

According to professional plasters, the fewer technological layers a facade finish has, the higher its reliability. Of course, this applies to cases when the basis and coatings are organically interacting with each other. Adhesion is one of the basic conditions for the formation of a reliable bond between dissimilar materials. It is the completion of this function that justifies the inclusion of an additional layer in the form of a quartz primer on a water-dispersion basis. Does the presence of this layer in the coating structure hinder? The only technical and structural drawback from this inclusion is associated with a thickening of the facing โ€œpieโ€, but in the situation with the facade this factor is not critical either.
