Sechenov Institute: alma mater of medicine

1 Sechenov Medical Institute is the oldest Russian university. This year marks the 256th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial Moscow University, which became the progenitor of the current Academy of Medicine named after Sechenov. The faculty was opened at the suggestion of the Russian scientist Lomonosov with the good will of Empress Elizabeth. Significant support for the project was provided by Count Shuvalov, known for his progressive views.

Sechenov Institute

The newly organized faculty of medicine did not need a long formation period, classes began almost immediately, in November 1758. Teachers were invited from among medical scientists: Veniaminov Peter and Semyon Zybelin became the first professors, later Ivan Sibirsky and Fedor Politkovsky joined them. The faculty flourished and developed, in 1804 in its structure there were already six independent departments and three institutes. All expenses were paid from the state treasury. Russia annually received hundreds of well-trained top-level physicians who were distributed throughout the country. The level of medical care for the population at the beginning of the 19th century increased markedly.

Currently, the Sechenov Academy of Medicine is also known as the Sechenov Institute. This is the largest scientific organization for the training and subsequent certification of young doctors. Those who have received a diploma and have already begun work, periodically return to the walls of their own university, where they take advanced training courses. Sechenov Institute is the main unit of all Russian universities, both medical and pharmaceutical. The Clinical Center operates under the auspices of the Sechenov Academy, with 18 clinics for various purposes with 3 thousand inpatient beds.

Sechenov Medical Institute includes a scientific center consisting of five research institutes, research institutes of pharmaceuticals, molecular medicine, parasitology, phthisiopulmonology and research institutes of public health. Its reading rooms have 400 seats, and the delivery of books on hand reaches 500 thousand a year. It operates an information Internet portal focused on the publication "Russian Medicine". Currently, work is underway to introduce the Russian-English version of the indexing of publications. To this end, the Sechenov Institute collaborates with the National Library of the United States.
