History of creation

The Dali Museum in Barcelona opened in 1974. It is located in the city of Figueres, which is actually a suburb of Barcelona. The exposition is located in the building of the old city theater, in which back in 1918, Salvador Dali presented his first works at a collective exhibition.

Many years later, Dali planned to create a museum in a ruined building, but not quite an ordinary one. The master wanted to place in it not the originals, but reproductions of his works, and the city authorities did not like it. As a result, Dali agreed to exhibit his work, and restoration work began in the building. In addition to the ruins of the theater, the medieval walls of the city and the tower, which was later called the Galatea Tower, were involved. The museum was built over 14 years. The main part of the capital of Salvador Dali was invested in the implementation of this unique project. The great artist devoted the last years of his life to his brainchild.

The museum building is impressive. The restored facade of the theater, which was built in the neoclassical style, is surprisingly combined with the bright-carmine ancient wall and the Galatea tower.

On the surface of the walls is a voluminous decor painted in gold. From afar, it resembles a symbol of the French monarchy - lilies. Amazing and even shocking are the huge figures that are located at the very top of the tower and walls. These are different-sized chicken eggs.

Above the old building of the former city theater rises the dome, which itself is a work of art. It is made in the form of a sphere of latex and glass. The author of this masterpiece is the architect Emilio Pinero. The dome was created as a reflection of Dali's philosophy. He was sure that other worlds actually exist, however, they are inside each of us.

Museum exposition

The Dali Museum in Barcelona does not cease to amaze even after the first acquaintance. A surreal composition is set right at the entrance, which depicts Newton, revealing his famous law of gravity. Specialists and ordinary visitors are still arguing why the master made a hole in the scientist’s head.

As it should be in decent houses, the hosts are welcomed by guests. The owner himself sits behind the wheel of a black Cadillac. Behind the car is a very impressive figure of the hostess, made of metal. The female figure is naked, and at first glance there is little surrealism in it, except for the yellow boat above her head, floating on the waves of condoms. Thus, Dali outlined her many trips to young lovers.

In the main hall, which is located under the famous dome, there is only one exhibit - the legendary canvas “Gala looking at the sea”. The secret of this picture is that at close range you don’t notice anything unusual, but you should move about twenty meters away from it and you will see a portrait of A. Lincoln.

Hall of masterpieces

The Dali Museum in Barcelona does not have a plan customary for any museum, there are no monotonous excursions from hall to hall. Visitors are constantly returning to nodal points.
