Everyone knows the main transport problem of large cities with heavy traffic - traffic jams and congestion. Intercepting parking lots is a measure that can help to kill two birds with one stone: reduce the number of spontaneously occurring clusters of parked cars and encourage people to change to public transport. But there are two nuances.

Firstly, intercepting parking lots can reduce the number of cars on the road, mainly due to the so-called pendulum migration, that is, people coming to the city from the region to work. Since riding in electric trains is a dubious pleasure, as a rule, such people move as far as possible in cars. In theory, a resident of the region gets to the parking lot, leaves his vehicle there for the whole day and transfers to the metro or bus, which he gets to his work, without standing in traffic jams and creating them, and also not looking for a parking space in walking distance from the place of work. And here comes into effect such a factor as the location of the parking lot. Itβs rare that, having almost reached work, he wants to leave the car and change the bus, itβs easier to get to your destination. Therefore, all intercepting parking should be located on the far approaches to the central part of the city, but at the same time be convenient
in terms of transferring from personal transport to public transport.
Secondly, we can say that public transport, in particular, the metro is already quite seriously loaded, so it is not known whether it can withstand a significant increase in passenger traffic. That is why the development of the public transport network should occur simultaneously with the construction of parking lots.
In both Russian capitals, intercepting
parking lots are now actively being built
. Moscow currently has 15 parking lots near the following
metro stations
: Volokolamskaya, Strogino, two on
Slavyansky Boulevard, Dmitry Donsky
Boulevard , Annino, Vykhino, four each on Shipilovskaya and Zyablikovo. The total number of parking spaces exceeds 3.6 thousand. Until the end of 2013, it is planned to organize 8 more parking lots at 4
metro stations
: Izmailovskaya, Novokosino, Krasnogvardeiskaya and
Admiral Ushakov Boulevard
.In St. Petersburg there are also intercepting parking lots. SPb at the moment may
boast 9 beautiful parking lots near the metro stations Akademicheskaya, Ladozhskaya, Obukhovo, Prosveshcheniya Avenue, Alexander Nevsky Square, Leninsky Prospekt, Parnas, Polytechnic. Their total capacity is 1345 cars. During the year, 4 more parking lots are planned to be opened in St. Petersburg near the stations of Komendantsky Prospekt, Grazhdansky Prospekt, Pionerskaya and Kirovsky Zavod.
Intercepting parking should be convenient and not too expensive. In addition, the number of seats should be sufficient to accommodate everyone, otherwise the initiative will lose its meaning. Intercepting parking will work both at commercial and at reduced rates. Leaving a car in the parking lot is free of charge, subject to 2 metro rides.
Since the experience of using such parking is still insufficient, it is too early to judge the effectiveness of such a measure. However, unnecessary parking in the cities loaded with vehicles will not interfere, so we hope that the projects of transfer hubs and new metro stations will provide parking spaces in the future.
