The provision of a break in studies due to various reasons, while maintaining the student’s conditions and place of study, is called academic leave. Any particular student can receive it when certain events occur. The grounds for its provision must be valid. The article discusses the classification of these holidays and the process of obtaining them.
In what cases is provided?
The reasons for the academic leave are listed in the 455 Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of 2013. It states that students of both higher and secondary special educational institutions have the right to receive it. In this case, the grounds for obtaining academic leave should be compelling, namely:
- a disease that does not allow attending training sessions;
- family circumstances;
- conscription for military service.
The right to receive this leave was regulated by Federal Law No. 273- adopted in 2012.
Reason 1: health condition
Academic leave at a university or other educational institution may be granted for the student’s state of health. To do this, he must submit a medical conclusion to the management, which will indicate that this person needs to take a break in the learning process.
Reason 2: family circumstances
Academic leave is granted in the presence of relevant circumstances prevailing in the student's family:
- if necessary, care for a disabled adult family member;
- if it is necessary to care for a disabled child who is more than 3 years old;
- in the case of young children under 3 years of age, for which appropriate care is required;
- during pregnancy;
- at birth.
Also, the administration can provide such leave in case of difficult financial situation of the family, which will not allow you to pay tuition fees when the latter is implemented on a paid basis.
Reason 3: Conscription
As you know, full-time students receive a respite from the performance of military duties until the end of their training. Students of the correspondence form of training, when called up for military service, can take academic leave at the university.
For full-time students, it must be borne in mind that if the period of such a vacation exceeds one year, then the delay is no longer valid. Graduate and graduate students receive it.
Providing academic leave
Its term may not exceed two years, while their current regulations do not limit their number during training. But you need to keep in mind that the budget place will remain for the student (if any) only for the duration of the first long rest. If students of a paid form of study go on such a vacation, then for its time payment is suspended.
Its receipt is largely determined by the leadership of the institution.
Documents
There are not many of them. First of all, the student must write an application for academic leave. It is provided to the university administration or the directorate of a secondary special educational institution with documents that confirm the reason for such a long break in the learning process. This may be a summons from the military enlistment office for conscription for military service or a medical certificate for academic leave.
The application is reviewed by management within 10 days. After this time, an order is issued. It can carry information:
- on the provision of academic leave;
- about the refusal to provide it.
The latter should include motivated reasons.
Documents filed when applying for medical leave
They mean student disability. Direction for medical examination can be taken in the governing body of an educational institution. You need to come to the clinic with a certificate for academic leave of form 095u, which confirms the student's incapacity for work for 10 calendar days, or certificate 027u, which extends the previous one to 30 calendar days.
The medical board draws up its opinion. It indicates the reason for the need for such leave and the term.
In this case, academic leave may be granted in connection with the following circumstances:
- pregnancy and childbirth;
- quarantine period;
- rehabilitation after injuries and serious illnesses.
Also, the design of such a break in studies may be related to the health of a close relative, for which constant care is required.
The most popular is getting this type of maternity leave.
Below are the steps to be taken for this reason:
- apply to the antenatal clinic for pregnancy and 095u certificates, which are presented to the leadership of the educational institution in order to receive directions for medical examination;
- an extract from the outpatient card of the antenatal clinic on registration for pregnancy, a student ID card (a test book may be required), a certificate 095y are brought to the clinic at the place of residence or study;
- the student undergoes a medical examination, receives a decision on the basis of which she writes an application for the provision of academic leave.
It is provided for pregnancy for 2 years, but for the next 2 years it passes in the form of parental leave, so the total duration is 4 years.
Documents to be submitted when making leave for family reasons
These may include:
- health status of one of the family members;
- referring him to surgery;
- difficult financial situation that does not allow to pay for training.
Here, in the first two cases, it is necessary to provide information on the state of health of a particular person who is a member of the student’s family or on referring him to surgery.
The last reason can be confirmed by a certificate from the social security authorities. If the student is less than 23 years old, then the latter is presented to the parents who pay him tuition.
At the same time, a certificate of family composition is submitted, which, as a rule, is obtained from the administrations of the respective municipalities or settlements.
If it is impossible to document family circumstances, the issue of granting academic leave to a student is decided by the leadership of the educational institution.
Other grounds for obtaining leave in question
In addition to the above reasons, which are mandatory, the leadership of the educational organization can provide it in case of the following problems:
- death of a close relative;
- participation in research projects;
- long business trip;
- an invitation to study (with the intention of returning back and continuing studies at this educational institution) or an internship abroad.
Other conditions
In the case of training a student or student at a budget place with a scholarship, its payments for the duration of such a vacation are suspended, and from the moment they leave it, they resume. This does not apply to social scholarships. It is paid in the same manner as before.
If the student is in arrears in the delivery of subjects, then the leadership of the educational institution may refuse to grant him the required leave. With the most compelling reasons, it cannot refuse (to which medical indications belong), however, it will be necessary to resolve the issue of debt liquidation with it, for example, after the end of the course of such a rest from study.
Exit from vacation
Before starting the educational process anew, the student must:
- write a statement on the closure of such leave and its admission to the learning process;
- attach to it the opinion of the medical board, which will indicate that the resumption of studies is allowed.
The application is submitted no later than the last day of vacation and no later than 11 days of the start of the semester. If these dates are overdue, the student will be considered on vacation, which in the future will lead to his expulsion from this institution.
The exit from the condition in question can be done ahead of schedule. At the same time, an application is submitted in which the reason for leaving the vacation is signed. If this is associated with recovery, then the conclusion of the medical board is attached to it.

In the process of training, various life situations related to health, conscription, and family circumstances may arise. In these cases, the student has the right to take an academic leave. It can be provided for up to 2 years an unlimited number of times, but there are restrictions on the granted deferment from military service and maintaining a budgetary place. By the time the vacation ends, a number of measures must be taken so as not to be expelled from the ranks of students.
