Who is I. McGuinness?

Work The Well

One of Yvonne McGuinness’s recent work, The Well, is a three-screen production. Video and sound installation, presented in a magnificent, decommissioned church of the XVII century. The film is presented on three screens - sometimes on one, then on two or at once on three, which keeps the viewer in suspense.

St Patricks Well is a picturesque place, very popular with pilgrims, within walking distance of the city of Clonmela. One of Ireland’s largest holy wells. Water flows into the pond, made in the early Christian, Celtic style. There is also a 17th-century church; David Flanner is well known to visitors to this wonderful place. An elderly man caring for a holy place knows almost everything about this place, and he will conduct a tour better than any guide.

The Well opens with a frame with David Flanner, known as the “keeper of the well.” He slowly walks around the well, talks with visitors, then moves to the middle of the well - this is a large pond, and cleans the surface. Soon Liv O'Donoghue, a ballerina from Dublin, “bursts into the film”. She wraps the cross in the center of the pond with white material - possibly muslin. And dancing - glides over the water, as if performing an ancient ritual.

The line between the dynamic movements of the dancer and the leisurely work of the “keeper of the well” is rather thin, but convincing. They charge this place with a special spirit, their movements on the screen capture the viewer. It is clear that Yvonne McGuinness spent a lot of time exploring this object to feel its spirit, the passage of time, and her brilliant work The Well is the best evidence of this.

The wood lands

Holding ground where the wood lands is another work of Yvonne McGuinness, a two-channel production of the film next to her family home. The fields where she often played were once part of a huge estate owned by the Plunkett family. The place where the patriarchs roamed is now Malahide Golf Club. Revising this place for her work, she worked with a group of young people from Dublin 15's Foroige.

The film captures their crucial stage in life when they begin to find their place in the world. It combines documentary films and the theatrical atmosphere of phased reading. That which is naturalistic and real is shifted by the text narrations of the past era. Borders and meaning are shifted, at the same time shifting and crowding out the audience both visually and verbally.

Other jobs

Most of Yvonne’s work touches on the tense moment between the artist’s desire for self-expression and his conflicting urge to hide what is personal. Other works of Yvonne McGuinness are presented on her website, among them:

  • The central field.
  • You Can't Feel What You Feel.
  • Moving mountains, wishing well, Bridget Cleary we won't tell.
  • Mobile Monuments (in the form of a promotion).
