To create an individual look of the house, cottage, many decorative elements are used. However, I want to talk separately about one of them. Namely - what is a bas-relief. This is a way of decorating the walls, facades of the room. A relief sculptural image is created on the surface, which is visible at half the volume.
From the history of the bas-relief
This architectural element has an ancient history. It was used in India, Persia, Egypt, America, Assyria. Most often they were decorated with pediments of temples, with religious images decorated religious buildings in ancient Rome and Greece. However, in modern design it has not lost its relevance. Most often in everyday life it is called stucco molding, decorative modeling or volumetric panels. Sculptural images can decorate not only the interior of the premises, but also the facades of buildings, their decoration on the outside. In the XIX century, only noble gentlemen, people who enjoyed great respect and honor, could decorate their houses in this way. Now it is available to everyone. A modern bas-relief is an opportunity to convey respectability and comfort. Only a professional can create such sculptural elements.
Practical use of stucco molding
Decorative volumetric panels are used not only to give the design a certain mood, belonging to one or another style, but also to adjust the space. Relief paintings will help create a peculiar charm of the room and hide the flaws of the surface, as well as mask the utilities. In size, they are different, in accordance with the chosen plot and the task. For example, use this technique. The landscape, created as a relief composition, occupies the entire wall and smoothly passes into decorative plaster.
How to create an image
Landscapes, human figures, objects, buildings, plants are chosen as a drawing. Sometimes masters create real pictures, art compositions. Depending on the manufacturing method, a manual or cast bas-relief is distinguished. The first is created using putty, primer and polyurethane adhesive. These are the author's works, which allow to give the interior an individual unique look. The second option involves the use of polyurethane; bas-reliefs are also made of gypsum. Use stone, metal, marble, clay. Design panels are created on a pre-prepared wall. The work is complex and painstaking. At the request of the customer, the sculptural figures are either coated with monochrome wax or tinted in a specific color. Then do the backlight. The created effect is favorably emphasized by such materials as bronze, stone, gold. To create an antique relief image, it is covered with platinum.
Plots
Modern masters of the bas-relief will be able to satisfy almost any customer request. After all, the choice of techniques is rich, and there are a great many plots for creating volumetric images. For example, it can be landscapes, a city panorama, ancient deities, flower arrangements, heraldic elements, and much more that a designer fantasy will offer. You can choose a three-dimensional panel of a certain style. For example, in the Baroque style, the bas-relief is a floral composition, ornaments. If you want to recreate an antique interior, then images illustrating myths will do. Fairy castles, as well as fairies and other magical creatures, will complement the children's room. In the kitchen, the symbols of abundance, still lifes with vegetables, flowers, fruits will look wonderful. Of the recognized masters, we can mention the French architect Jules Arduin-Mansard, who worked in the XVIII century. He took part in the decoration of the palace in Versailles. Modern professionals are adopting those achievements that they inherited from past times and new technologies.
Interior decoration

In design, sculptural panels are used to recreate the classical style, since the bas-relief is an integral part of it. And since this element is able to be performed using various techniques, it can be successfully integrated into any interior. It allows you to place accents, set the main theme of the design of the room. For example, in the living room it will create a feeling of solemnity, on the contrary, in the bedroom it will serve as an atmosphere of peace, in the corridor it will become the embodiment of movement. Very often, the bas-relief in the interior serves as an excellent decoration for the fireplace, it is framed by arched openings. Sculptural panels are perfectly combined with natural materials, stone and forging. In the classical style, it is inherent to use relief images to fill the space between the doorway and the ceiling. This archaic, but at the same time not out of fashion element will be wonderfully combined with modern audio and video equipment. Stucco images complement the interior of the kitchen. Fake shelves, tricks, doors or windows are created, as if they were open to another world. Superficial shallow niches decorated with a bas-relief and complemented by a backlight that emphasizes the convexity of the image. In the bedroom, a bas-relief on the wall opposite the bed or above its head will be appropriate. If your country house has a column that does not fit into the interior, it is enough to decorate it with relief figures to give it splendor.
Front solutions
Stucco decorates not only the interior of the home, but also serves as a magnificent decoration outside the country house, villa, cottage. Typically, relief images are in the form of a floral ornament. Apply the same techniques as when creating the interior.
