Private American University of Duke, engaged in research activities, is very popular with college and school graduates. The institution was founded in 1838 thanks to the Methodists and Quakers. The university received its real name much later, or rather, in 1924.
Foundation History
The history of the institution in question is quite simple. In 1838, a group of Quakers and Methodists founded a private school on this site, which 4 years later received the official name - Union Institute Academy. Over the next few years, the building changed its name until 1859.
Trinity College's main sponsors were Washington Duke and Juliana S. Carra, influential Methodists who made a fortune from the lucrative tobacco industry. These two respected people donated considerable development funds to the institution.
In 1896, Washington Duke donated about $ 100,000 to the college, but set a condition that said: "The doors of the institution should be open for both men and women." It was about gender equality, which Duke encouraged.
After 28 years, the son of the famous tobacco magnate James B. Duke donated more than $ 40 million to the fund of medical, charitable and educational institutions. Trinity College was on this list. In turn, the president of the institution insisted that the building be renamed Duke University. The United States in this case replenished with another outstanding educational institution.
