Do-it-yourself glued and profiled timber

Many home craftsmen would like to know how to make glued beams with their own hands. Everyone knows that this material is relatively expensive. In addition, it often happens that you need only one beam, to go for which can be simply unprofitable. For example, many owners of private homes are satisfied with this material, as from very strong and durable, bearing beams.

Making such a beam with your own hands is not too difficult. First of all, you need to prepare the tools. You will need:

  • hacksaw;
  • measuring instruments (ruler and tape measure);
  • grinder;
  • good glue for wood;
  • clamps;
  • acetone or another solvent;
  • lumber.

In the event that you want to make a glued beam with your own hands, you need to make sure that all the workpieces are most thoroughly dried. Otherwise, the finished product will warp over time.

So, the first thing you need to mark and cut all the components of the future beam. At the same time, about five centimeters are left for allowances. Take several blanks and place them next to each other so that the annual rings and fibers are directed in opposite directions. Further, in order to make a quality beam with your own hands, you need to assemble it without using glue. In this case, you will have a great opportunity to fix all possible flaws.

Surfaces on which the adhesive composition will be applied in the future must be treated with special tools. But first you need to carefully polish them. To do this, use a grinder and a skin. Next, making the beam with your own hands, you need to clean it from dust using a brush. The resulting flat and smooth surface is treated with a solvent degreaser. Acetone can be used for this purpose.

Then, to prevent rotting of the material, the entire beam, including the surface on which the glue will be applied, is wiped with an antibacterial agent. It is inexpensive and can be purchased at any building materials store. Continuing to make the beam with your own hands, the processed parts are carefully dried. After that, glue is applied to the joints. At this stage, it is important to comply with all the recommendations given to him in the instructions.

DIY profiled beam
All surfaces are gently and without gaps smeared with glue. Thus, the finished glued beam is gradually assembled. After this work is completed, the resulting material is fixed with clamps. After the glue dries (the time is also indicated in the instructions), the timber is subjected to final processing - planing with a grinder or a planer until it receives a beautiful streamlined shape typical of a factory product.

Do-it-yourself profiled timber is even easier to perform. You need to take an ordinary beam and give it the necessary geometric shape, using any available tools for wood processing. The field of how the desired result will be obtained, the timber is treated as carefully as possible with a planer and sandpaper to such an extent that all its surfaces become perfectly smooth.

The final step in the manufacture of both glued and profiled timber should be processing with a special tool that will increase their resistance to fire.
