"Mourning of Christ" - Michelangelo's delightful play

A work of art (in stone or on canvas), which is a picture on which Christ and the Mother of God mourning him are depicted, is called the pieta. Michelangelo was no more than 25 years old when he completed his creation, which became the perfect example of iconography in sculpture. It is impossible to say exactly when it was conceived and when the sculpture was finished, but many sources of the history of fine art refer to the period from 1497 to 1501.

Michelangelo’s Pieta delights with divine humility in Mary’s sorrow before the bereavement. There is not a shadow of despair on the face of the Mother of God, the calm, quiet sadness of her all-forgiving soul reflected in her beautiful face illuminates the image with a halo of holiness. Christ looks as if he only fell asleep after a hard walking trip, and his serene dream is about to be interrupted by the gentle touch of her hands.

Michelangelo’s delightful piece is created in such a way

that anyone who sees her feels in her heart the closeness of awareness happening in Mary. And this happens, despite the hundreds of years that have risen between the person who sees the sculpture and its origin in the imagination of the master. The author achieved this effect with the help of his patience, talent, and the decision to seclude Christ and Mary, thereby relieving the composition of secondary, and therefore superfluous, figures. With this technique, the Michelangelo’s drink differs from the drinks of many artists of the 15th century who portrayed Our Lady and Christ in their paintings surrounded by other characters. But among famous artists there are those who, when creating the piece, like Michelangelo Buonarroti, were guided by the idea of solitude, the idea of a two-figure composition. If we take into account the fact that Michelangelo was the first among the other recognized geniuses to glorify this type of play, then it can be argued that the great sculptor became the founder of subtribution in the fine arts of those times.

In the modern world, there are many copies of Michelangelo’s play, and the original is stored in the Vatican City in St. Peter's Basilica. Giorgio Vasari wrote that the sculptor accidentally heard a dispute between people about who is the true author of this creation.

The situation ended with the sculpture "Mourning of Christ" became the only signed work of Michelangelo.

The drink "Rondanini", begun 55 years after the first, was his last work. Unfinished, she became for Michelangelo the imprint of his death. For all the roughness of the lines of this unfinished work, considering the pose of the figures, you can feel the emotional strain and despair of the Mother of God. This decision of Michelangelo sharply contrasts with the calmness of his first play. How symbolically these two sculptures embody youth and withering: the Mother of God, eternally young and unaware of grief, in the first drink, and mother, distraught from dumb despair, trying to raise her child in the second. Of course, Michelangelo is an outstanding sculptor of all time, even in his unfinished sculpture you can feel the power that inspires the soul of any Orthodox person. The statues of Michelangelo Buonarroti are great examples of sculptural art, sublime and soulful, they win the hearts of those who appreciate the beautiful.
