Sometimes in the Orthodox Church one can hear the cry “axios” from the clergy. What does it mean? From Greek, the word translates as "worthy." According to tradition, such a special proclamation should be made by a bishop, deacon, priest at ordination or consecration, at the laying on of awards of a hierarchical nature or at the intronization of all the Patriarchs.
Axios. What does this mean in the Orthodox Church?
The first mention of the exclamation can be seen on a unique monument in Syria. It is called the Testament of Jesus Christ. It belongs to 3-5 centuries. There, people immediately after the ordination of the bishop say exactly 3 times “Axios”. What does it mean? So the clergy confirms, testifies to the good disposition and absolutely immaculate behavior in the life of the delivered person.
First, the word is pronounced to those who perform the Sacrament. Then the cry should be repeated by all the priests present. And only then “axios” is proclaimed by all clergy. Further, the new one puts on the corresponding sacred outfits.
Simeon of Solunsky describes in detail the axios. What does this mean, in his opinion?
- The cry should be sung 3 times and loudly.
- It happens outside the altar.
- “Axios” means that everyone believes in the grace of the delivered person. He is known by angels, is worthy of God, and must conduct his priesthood righteously.
- This is a kind of prayer.
- Axios is a sign of acceptance of choice.
Catholic Church
Catholics also have an expression, an exclamation, a semblance of an axios. Its meaning is a little different. The phrase "Dignus est" is pronounced only during ordination. And this exclamation is uttered exclusively by the people who are present at this Sacrament.
Opposite value
There is another exclamation in church practice - anaxios. From the Greek word is translated as "unworthy." And there were such cases when it was used loudly.
