A talented person, as a rule, shows his abilities in many branches of art. The greatest Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky was no exception. His paintings are little known to the general public (everyone knows mainly only about his work in GROWTH). But it was this talent that began to manifest itself in Volodya from childhood and youth, earlier than all subsequent ones.

Family Continuity

The poet’s father, Vladimir Konstantinovich, painted with pleasure. According to his sketches, some furniture was even built in the house. And mother and sisters were fond of painting. The poet’s sister, Lyudmila, even underwent preparation for admission to the Stroganov Art School with one professional artist, S. Rubella. She showed him the early drawings and paintings of Mayakovsky. Rubella became the first painting teacher of the future poet (who had not yet begun to write poetry at that time).

Moscow period

Become a professional artist! This thought did not leave Vladimir even after the death of his father, when the family moved to the capital. We lived poorly. They ate sparingly. The whole family sometimes burned caskets and painted Easter eggs. Vladimir painted a lot, most often - portraits in pencil. Mayakovsky’s paintings of this period are little preserved. The pencil portrait of the revolutionary Morchadze, who lived in the family for some time, is known.

Revolution and war

At age 14, a young man joins the Communist Party. Engaged in active political activity. For which he is arrested three times. In prison, begins to write poetry, but the desire to become an artist does not leave the poet. After 1910, he studied at the School of Sculpture and Architecture, where he learns the basics of vocational education. Mayakovsky’s paintings of 1912-1915: "Woman's portrait", "Model", "Iron" and some others. Various techniques were used: watercolor, ink, pencil, charcoal. When there were no materials, the poet could do with improvised means. Burnt matches, cigarette butts soaked in ink were used. The poet loved to depict giraffes, dogs, zebras, crocodiles. And his favorite pastime was to draw friendly cartoons on some acquaintances (Repin and Chukovsky, for example).

The notebooks of the Poet of the Revolution are also dotted with drawings. Most vividly, he showed his talent as an artist at the Russian Telegraph Agency. But few people know that the first posters and paintings by Mayakovsky were made in collaboration with Kazimir Malevich back in 1914. This happened on the wave of patriotism during the First World War. Satirical posters ridiculed Austrians and Germans who encroached on Russia.
