Many of us would like to know how to repair the roof of the garage on our own.
The basis for repairing the roof of a garage, as a rule, is the technology for repairing a soft roof. It is not difficult to carry out such repairs, and it will not take much time, since in terms of installation, rolled roof coverings are the simplest. There is no need to have any special equipment or special skills.
Repair of the roof of the garage should begin with the preparation of the foundation. If this is a repair, then the roof can simply be patched or covered with old layers with 1-2 more layers of new material at the defect site.
Before patching, all defects must be eliminated (cut down). Then the surface is disposed of from the garbage and poured with bitumen mastic. Next, lay a layer of roofing material, the size of which should be larger than the defective area over which the repair is made. The edges must be greased with bitumen mastic. However, this method often does not bring the desired result.
Another method of repairing the roof is that the old layers are not removed, and two more layers are deposited on top of the old coating. This leads to an increase in the load on the roof, which also needs to be taken into account. Repair of the roof of the garage in this way begins with the fact that the old cover is cleared of debris. It must be remembered that this method is not used if the roof already contains more than eight layers. Installation of new layers is carried out in the usual way.
But it happens that the roof is in a very worn condition. In this case, overhaul of the roof of the garage is carried out, which consists of the following steps: removing all old layers, repairing the base, applying a waterproofing coating, installing heat insulation, screed, laying roofing material, applying a protective layer, if necessary.
Overhaul of the roof of buildings is carried out using the following means: gas burner, roofing material (roofing material), a knife for cutting roofing material, bitumen mastic or sealant, cement, insulation, broom. To heat the material, it is recommended to use a gas torch rather than a blowtorch, since the heating time of the roofing material in this case is significantly reduced.
When removing the old coating, both special equipment (a machine for removing the old layer) and an ordinary ax are used, in which the wooden handle is replaced with a long metal one. The base of the roof is cleaned of debris and inspected for defects. If there is no big damage, then there is no need for a cement screed. If it is produced, then sometimes it is preceded by a roof covering with a heater (polystyrene, gravel, etc.). Within a few hours after the cement is laid, the surface is coated with a thin layer of bitumen, which prevents the evaporation of moisture.
The main stage is the actual laying of the roofing material, which is made after the cement hardens. It is advisable to use materials made of fiberglass, which has a longer service life, in contrast to materials based on cardboard. Stacking is carried out starting from the bottom of the roof and rising higher. All rows of material are laid with an overlap of more than 10 cm. Seams must be treated with bitumen mastic. Next, the next layer is laid, while the seams of the first and second layers should not coincide.
The last stage is the application of a protective layer of bitumen mastic, which is sprinkled with stone chips and rolled with a roller. This completes the repair of the roof of the garage. This is a simple process that is usually performed by two people.
