Options for filing roof overhangs

After the erection of the roof and laying of the roofing material, it is necessary to perform roof sheathing. This is necessary in order to give it a complete and attractive appearance. In order for everything to turn out efficiently and for a long time, a very serious approach to the execution of work should be taken. The most important thing in the installation process is to adhere to safety precautions. Hemming of roof overhangs can be performed using various technologies and materials. About which is better to use, and will be discussed later.

The process of filing overhangs: technology and design features

overhang filing
After the erection of the rafters, laying of the roofing material and the completion of the finishing work, overhanging of the overhangs follows. The price for work can be quite high (from 300 rubles per linear meter and higher, depending on the type of roof and the material used). Therefore, do everything better with your own hands.

If the binder is done before siding, then you must first perform the following steps:

  1. Before filing, you need to check the quality of installation of the supporting structure. It should be erected perfectly evenly, and all rafters should be on the same level.
  2. Sheathing can be done with different materials, but the most common are boards of the same width, so that after the work is completed, the roof looks attractive.
  3. The duct sections of the roof supporting structure must be sawed off in an upright position, and the end sections should be sawn off in a similar manner to the rest.
  4. When the rafters are fixed and the first board is full, the rest are beaten with orientation to it.

It is worth noting that if you are going to make external wall insulation, then this should be done only after the filing of the eaves overhang is completed.

What materials can be used and their operational characteristics

As mentioned earlier, binder can be carried out with various materials. Which one to choose depends on individual wishes, the characteristics of a particular building, the materials from which the house was built, etc.

The main criterion for the choice of material, which must be taken into account, is the strength and reliability of the protection of the cornice sections from the negative effects of precipitation. In addition, overhang filing should provide good ventilation. Also, do not forget about the operational characteristics of the material. It must be durable and maintain its characteristics throughout the entire life cycle. Let's take a closer look at each of the materials, and try to find out which one is better to choose.

Decking

Profiled flooring is a sheet of galvanized steel with a special coating. It is universal because it has many color shades, provides reliable protection against atmospheric precipitation, and also has an affordable cost. If the binder is made using corrugated board, then a small gap should be left to ensure good ventilation. It is quite easy to work with this material, so the installation does not take much time and effort. An alternative to filing with profiled flooring is filing overhangs of roofs with spotlights.

Spotlights

Spotlights are panels made of plastic. This material has a lot in common with siding, but there are some differences. Spotlights have a large thickness, so they have increased strength and durability. In addition, there are perforations on the plastic panels, which provides excellent ventilation. The filing of the eaves of the roof with spotlights is also good because the plastic contains special additives that protect it from ultraviolet radiation. Therefore, this material will retain its original color for a very long time.

Wood paneling

Another common option is to file the overhang with a clapboard. But for everything to turn out to be high-quality and durable, you should use only high-quality materials, which are currently sold in various specialized stores at affordable prices. A low-quality lining will not last long and very quickly lose its attractiveness. When choosing a material, great attention should be paid to its thickness. The bigger it is, the better. In addition, the lining should be of medium humidity, because if it is too wet, then it will begin to rot over time, and a tree that is too dry will crack. Before starting the work of filing roof eaves, it is recommended to leave the lining for a month in the fresh air so that it adapts to the particular climate of your region.

Wooden plank

The most common option is to file the roof overhangs with a board. For these purposes, a planed edged board is usually used. In the process of lining between the boards leave 2 centimeters. The main advantage of this material is that it provides excellent ventilation, thanks to which the optimum moisture level will always be maintained in the under-roof space.

Plastic lining

If for some reason filing overhangs with spotlights does not suit you, for example, due to the high cost of the material, then you can use a plastic lining. This material has the lowest price on the market. When choosing a material should take into account its resistance to moisture. Installation of such a lining is carried out using special plastic corners.

Siding

Filing overhangs with siding is another common version of the final stage of the construction of the roof.

On sale you can find the following varieties of this material:

  • vinyl;
  • wooden;
  • steel;
  • galvanized.

The most commonly used vinyl siding. This is due to the fact that it has a low weight, good strength and durability and low price.

Siding is made in the form of panels, the length of which can be from 300 to 350 centimeters. At their ends there are special locks, thanks to which it is very easy and fast to fix the material. Panels can be with or without perforation. Overhanging of overhangs is most often done using perforated siding, as it provides good ventilation.

What to consider when working with siding?

When performing work on the filing of cornices with siding, the following recommendations should be adhered to:

  1. Do not store the material in direct sunlight, as well as at a temperature of 50 degrees and above.
  2. Siding should be installed freely in order to achieve good ventilation.
  3. When attaching the panels, do not push the locks too hard so as not to break them.
  4. Do not use sealant on corner sections.

When covering the cornices, it is first necessary to make a box. To do this, use wooden bars or an aluminum profile. If overhanging the overhangs with a board is performed, then the box should be made exclusively of this material.

Installation of the box is carried out using two boards. One of them is fixed along the wall, and the second is in an upright position.

Features of working with siding

There are two ways to bind:

  • installation of a frieze strip;
  • lack of strip.

Installation of siding is a very easy and quick process, but in order for the work to be done efficiently, you must correctly install the box. For this, the rafters must be installed perfectly evenly, and their ends are cut at right angles. After the construction of the rafter system, a crate is constructed. The eaves should be erected exclusively after warming the walls. To achieve good ventilation, it is necessary to build special grilles.

If you want the binder to be strong and durable, it is best to use copper siding for it. But here it is important to understand that the cost of this material is very high, so really evaluate your financial capabilities.

Among the main advantages of this material can be identified:

  • large selection of colors;
  • good thermal conductivity;
  • high resistance to negative environmental factors;
  • material is not subject to corrosion;
  • excellent ventilation, which is achieved through perforation.

If we talk about performance, copper siding is one of the best materials for filing overhangs of eaves.

The main methods of binder

roof overhangs
Regardless of the material with which you will bind, there are two main ways to do the work:

  1. Filing overhangs on the rafter system.
  2. Binder with trimming of the rafter system.

The first method is used on roofs with a small angle, when the owner of the house wants to increase the height of the building. The use of this technology is possible only if the lower part of the rafter system is at the same level. If this condition is not met, then boards are placed under the rafters, after which the first and last planks are mounted and fixed. It is recommended to use threads so that the rafters are installed evenly.

The second technology is the most common. It is based on the fact that a board is fixed on the bottom and end parts, and a wooden beam is fixed on the wall, which will be responsible for getting rid of moisture. It is worth noting that if the width of the overhang exceeds 450 millimeters, then an additional board is fixed in the center. It is necessary so that the overhang filer is more reliable. After that, all work is performed in the usual manner. One board is nailed to the crate, and the second is fixed parallel to it. Then, finishing materials are fixed on these boards.

Roofing: process

Before proceeding with the binder, you must first prepare the rafter system.

To do this, the following conditions must be met:

  • rafters should be at least 200 millimeters longer than the roof;
  • to perform the installation of rafters, you need a ledge, which is calculated depending on the size of the roof;
  • when cutting a bar for the construction of rafters, the ends should be cut vertically.

It is very important that the cut line is perfectly flat. Filing work should only begin after the insulation of the building facade has been completed. This is a very important point, because only in this way can you reliably seal joints at the joints so that precipitation does not fall into the under-roof space.

overhang siding
Equally important is the ventilation system, which is responsible for removing excess moisture from the attic.

For its construction, one of the following technologies is used:

  • through the construction of small gaps between the finishing material and the boards;
  • the creation of special holes that are closed with bars.

The most common and most effective way is to create ventilation openings, so on most homes you can find it.

In the process of doing the work you will need the following:

  • finishing material;
  • power saw;
  • electric drill;
  • Bulgarian;
  • screwdriver;
  • level;
  • hammer;
  • roulette;
  • fasteners;
  • cord;
  • stairs;
  • special antiseptic agents;
  • paint.

Binder works are performed in the following order:

  1. Finishing material is cut to a given size. If you use wooden materials for filing, then they should first be treated with antiseptics.
  2. If you plan to paint the binder, then it is better to do it right away, and proceed with installation should be after it dries.
  3. The rafter system is checked using the level. If it is not even, then this defect should be eliminated by stuffing boards. To fix them, use nails or wood screws.
  4. End plates are being installed.
  5. The cord is pulled. It will allow you to install the binder smoothly.
  6. At least 5 millimeters should be left between the individual elements of the binder so that when heated it does not burst and does not deform.

An alternative binder technology is the box mounting method. All work is performed in the following sequence:

  1. The material is cut to the specified sizes, after which the antiseptic is processed.
  2. In the lower part of the rafter system, a board is fixed, above which a bar is nailed by 10 millimeters.
  3. The installation of the binder should be done so that one part is on the board, and the other on the beam.
  4. Between the individual elements of the binder should be left 2 centimeters. This clearance will be responsible for ventilation.
  5. The binder is attached with screws, corners and profiled plates.

overhang filing
If you are filing with wooden boards of too long lengths, then the number of fasteners should be at least three. This will prevent deformation of the boards. Adhering to the advice and recommendations discussed in this article, you can do the filing of the roof overhangs yourself without any difficulty, even if you do not have any experience in construction work.
