History of creation
St. Nicholas Cathedral in Almaty was founded in 1904. Then Kazakh Almaty was called Verny. In Kuchugur, in the south-west of the city, there was Zubovskaya Square. The architect S.K. Troparevsky worked on the project. 4 years after the start of construction, the church of St. Nicholas was consecrated. As the abbot, the candidacy of Father Alexander Skalsky was proposed.
Sacred relics
The relics of Panteleimon, previously located on Mount Athos, were brought to the Nikolsky Cathedral in Almaty. They are kept here to this day. The relics of St. Barbara were brought from Kiev in a casket.
In the middle of the last century, the church was enriched with the icon of St. John the Prelate. Later in the cathedral appeared the icon of St. Nicholas.
In 2000, the cathedral received as a gift from one of the parishioners a particle of the Stone from the Cave of the Nativity of Christ in Bethlehem. It was installed in the oldest icon of the church - a similar image of St. Nicholas. Our days
In 2010, Metropolitan Alexander conducted the rite of consecration of a significant new building - the building was added to the church - the central Sunday school. It has become a center of Orthodoxy and spirituality, where children and youth are engaged. Sunday school received the support of the president.
In 2012, a monument was consecrated on Easter, which depicts St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Archbishop. The basis of the sculpture was Nikolai Mozhaysky, whose image is presented with a symbolic sword in his hand. This weapon is a spiritual weapon, a symbol of the Word of God, which should protect believers from evil forces.
