The starter is an important mechanism for every car. This device is presented in the form of a four-pole, four-brush DC motor. The starter is located on the right side of the cylinder block and it is fixed to the clutch housing by means of bolts.
The starter consists of the following parts:
- housing;
- Anchors
- overrunning clutch;
- caps in the amount of 2 pcs.;
- electromagnetic traction relay.
Starter Relay Value
The starter pull relay is responsible for engaging the drive gear of this device, as well as for shorting the stator power circuit and the armature windings. Bolts with contacts are located in the cover of the relay itself. One bolt is connected to the positive terminal of the battery, and the other to the stator and relay windings.
In the process of turning the ignition key, the output of this cover of the tag relay of the starter receives voltage, forming a magnetic field. Due to this, the anchor is retracted, and the contact bolts are closed, affecting the drive lever. Then, when the magnetic fields interact, the starter and hub anchors begin to rotate, and the overrunning clutch rollers jam. The resulting torque is transmitted through the coupling itself and the drive gear to the flywheel ring. Due to the excess of the gear rotation speed over the starter armature shaft, the clutch rollers wedge, and torque is not transmitted to the starter armature shaft.
If the key is returned to the first position, then the power supply circuit of the starter traction relay windings and contacts will open. Due to what the gear of the drive is disengaged.
How to check the starter?
Verification of the device can occur without a stand. For this procedure, you will need a tick and a multimeter. First you need to put the multimeter in voltage measurement mode on the terminals of the power supply. In this case, the battery must be 100% charged with a density of 1.28. After that you need:
- See the voltage drop when turning on the headlights and dimensions. With normal battery performance, this indicator will drop to 12.4-12.5 volts.
- Scrolling starter. To do this, you need an assistant who, on command, will include a starter. When scrolling, the voltage on the battery must be at least 10.5 volts. If there is a sluggish rotation at the indicated voltage drops, then you should check this indicator on the wires going from the motor housing to the negative of the battery. Similar actions are carried out with respect to the positive wire.
It should be noted that starters with a planetary gear with unscrewed candles, as well as starters without a gear, consume 20-30% less. If the reason is in the internal state, especially if it is a starter relay, then this device should be disassembled in order to identify existing defects. It is better to entrust this procedure to specialized centers, since often independent disassembly of the starter leads to its complete replacement. Checking the starter can be done in garage conditions, since this process does not require special tools.
