Sisley Alfred. Artist biography and paintings

There are artists whose paintings are as if permeated through air and light. This is Sisley Alfred. When you look at his paintings, you want to find yourself in that sunny and beautiful world that this painter saw and managed to convey this vision on canvas by the power of his artistic talent. One of the fathers of Impressionism - Camille Pissarro - once noticed that Sisley writes in a new way every time. From the lips of a venerable artist, such words sounded like the highest praise, because he considered this quality to be fundamental in impressionist painting. Nevertheless, during his lifetime, this talented artist was not able to achieve the recognition of critics and the public and died in complete obscurity and poverty.

Alfred Sisley - biography, the beginning of his career

The future artist was born in Paris on October 30, 1839. Happy parents named the newborn Alfred. It was a wealthy family, the father of the child successfully traded in silk and was able to give his son the best upbringing and education. Of course, the elder Sisley dreamed that his son would follow in his footsteps, and therefore, when Alfred was 18 years old, he was sent to England to learn commercial business. But it was not commerce that attracted the young man, but painting. In England, he became interested in the landscapes of Turner and the painting of Constable and Bonnington.

Sisley Alfred

Upon returning home, Sisley Alfred goes to study in the art workshop of Glair. There he met with Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet and Frederic Bazil. All four are looking for new ways in art, so Glair’s academic background quickly disappoints them. Sisley with friends leaves for the picturesque place of Chailly near Fonteblo. This is where his career begins. The artist forever gave his heart to the lovely provincial landscapes.

Further life in art

In 1866, Sisley Alfred worked a lot in the open air in Marlotte with Renoir. In 1866 he painted landscapes in Honfleur. Then the artist is attracted by Argenteuil and, of course, Port Marley, which he especially liked.

In parallel with his work, Sisley begins to take part in exhibitions. For the first time, critics drew attention to him in 1874. I must say that this artist did not feel a great need for fame. He had a restrained and shy disposition, he did not strive for leadership. Perhaps it was these qualities that prevented him from achieving the success that accompanied his comrades - Monet, Renoir and Pizarro.

In 1897, Sisley arranged a personal exhibition. But criticism reacted to it with absolute indifference, which was a big blow for the artist. In 1899, at the age of 60, Sisley died, and he waited for recognition.
