Description of the Faculty of Chemistry, Moscow State University

The division of MV Lomonosov Moscow State University, leading educational and research activities in the field of chemical sciences, is one of the oldest faculties. It combines the fundamental nature of education and the experience of introducing scientific areas in the learning process. Students who successfully graduated from the chemistry department of Moscow State University can count on getting a good and well-paid position not only at Russian enterprises, but also abroad.

History and our days

The establishment of the chemical department of Moscow State University by order took place on February 26, 1930, but, despite this, the faculty is considered effective from 10/01/1929. In the very first year of activity at the university, a discipline appeared - chemistry. The founder of Moscow State University Mikhail Vasilievich Lomonosov is the greatest scientist in Russia and the best chemist in the country of that era.

Lomonosov - creator of Moscow State University

The first chemical laboratory was built in 1761. It was located not far from the Resurrection Gate. The famous F.F. Reiss began teaching chemistry in 1800. In his era, students were not allowed to practice.

In 1822, one of the capable and talented students was sent to France and Germany for a detailed study of practical chemistry. After that, in 1828, he began the activities of a teacher. In 1837, the first chemical laboratory with a huge audience was founded.

Training reform

At that time, theories of chemical structure were developed at the university, and atoms and molecules were studied. Reform occurred when theory and practice in teaching became inseparable. The systematization of research has begun. Conversations were introduced (testing and evaluating students' knowledge in the educational system).

Now 1800 people work at the chemistry department of Moscow State University. 850 of them are associate professors or senior teachers. More than 1000 candidates and doctors of sciences. 700 people - technicians, laboratory assistants. At the chemical department of Moscow State University, more than 1,500 undergraduate and graduate students are educated.

Description of the Faculty of Chemistry, Moscow State University

Although powerful hoods work at the faculty, the atmosphere there is very "chemical" with its own specific smell. In educational and scientific laboratories (of which there are more than 70) a huge amount of chemical glassware and reagents, specific unique equipment. It is here that the development of chemistry as a science and the training of students, the transfer of knowledge to the younger generation.

The teaching staff, international relations, plus a unique atmosphere - all this made the Faculty of Chemistry of Moscow State University (chemical faculty) attractive to many applicants.

Students start their scientific work from the first year. There are 17 departments, so the choice of area for doing science is very wide. Students are given the opportunity to undergo internships in world research centers. They participate in scientific conferences, publish articles in foreign journals. The rest of the time is devoted to writing a thesis.

Areas of study

The first three years of study at the Faculty of Chemistry of Moscow State University, students study general disciplines — physics, higher mathematics, humanitarian subjects, and a foreign language. There are several areas for study in the magistracy of the faculty of Moscow State University. The term of study is two years. The postgraduate study of the faculty is available to distinguished students and who have shown interest in science and research.

The specialty chemistry is training specialists in four areas:

  1. Physical chemistry of promising processes and materials.
  2. Computational.
  3. High molecular weight compounds.
  4. Physical Chemistry.

Chemistry is allocated over 40% of the time, which is divided in half into theory and practical exercises in the laboratory. The study of mathematics, general theoretical physics accounts for 20% of the time. Compared with other faculties of the country - this is twice as much.

How to proceed

More than a thousand students and about 250 graduate students study at the faculty. The best applicants come here - excellent students, medalists, winners of olympiads.

Since 1993, through various scientific competitions and projects, young people have been selected from various cities of Russia and neighboring countries to attract talented youth.

Winners of some All-Russian Olympiads can enter the chemistry department of Moscow State University without exams.

Ambitious and talented people, keen on the ideas of chemistry, will always be welcome in the walls of the faculty. For this, a network of educational institutions was organized under the wing of the faculty, in which classes are held under the special program of Moscow State University.

It is also possible distance learning at the Faculty of Chemistry of Moscow State University. The general process of acquiring and gaining knowledge in this case remains the same as in full-time. The only difference is that the student has the opportunity to attend lectures, seminars and other training classes without leaving home.

Employment

Graduates of the Faculty of Chemistry have no problems finding a job. All paths are open to them - engineering, entrepreneurial, and, of course, scientific.

Chemist Career Day, which is held annually at the relevant faculty, helps in the search for work. The festival is attended by Russian employers, as well as employers from foreign countries who are interested in young professionals with education at the level that MSU provides.

It is not by chance that monuments to Mendeleev and Butlerov were erected at the main entrance of the university. These two scientists are the greatest pillars of chemical science. Their sculptures remind students that discoveries are made by people, which is not yet known in the universe, and that they must make future breakthroughs.
