Work on the diploma project and its defense is the last step separating the student from the coveted diploma. But here there are many delays associated with the design of the text and illustrative part of the thesis. We’ll talk about this today.
We are writing a diploma. Text design
Unfortunately, at the moment there are no uniform standards, therefore educational institutions, based on their practice, establish their own rules. The project manager simply cannot accept a diploma from a graduate whose design does not meet the stated requirements. In addition, the final qualification work will be kept at the department for 5 years and may well catch the eye of any of the checking authorities.
I would like to warn you right away that the examples that are given in this article are taken from various teaching aids, and the rules for applying for a 2013 diploma at your university may vary. Be careful!
So, at the moment, Microsoft Word is the most common software package that allows you to design and print both the illustrative part and the diploma itself. The design, the rules of which we will consider below, focuses just on this application program.
To begin with, we’ll take up the layout of the page, more precisely, the margins: left - 3 cm, right - 1.5 cm, top - 2 cm, bottom - 2 cm. As for the font, Times New Roman of 14 pins is considered standard. Please note that all work, including headings, must be typed in one font. Only resizing the font and its style is allowed. Pages should be numbered, following the end- to -end numbering from the title to the list of references and applications (if any). The title page is the first page, although the number "1" is not put. They are also not marked, but the contents and the first page of the introduction are included in the general numbering. Thus, you should start from the fourth page, that is, where the text begins.
The page number is placed in the middle of the bottom page margin without a dot.
Design chapters and sections
Each new chapter is printed on a new page, while sections go in a row. Chapters and subchapters should be entitled, with headings typed in capital letters without punctuation at the end. Schemes and tables are not submitted to the application and are placed inside the text. Moreover, they have a common numbering. Each must be signed. For example: "Table 1", below is its name. The rest of the illustrative material is placed in applications that go after the bibliography and have a separate numbering.
Another point that you should pay attention to is the design of formulas in a diploma. They are signed in
Arabic numerals within the chapter or paragraph. Their numbering consists of the paragraph number and the formula, separated by a dot. For example, "1.5" (the fifth formula of the first paragraph).
Bibliography
A bibliography or bibliography is a mandatory element that any diploma should contain. The design of this part, as a rule, varies greatly.
A graduate is recommended to use at least 40 sources containing regulatory legal acts, scientific and educational literature, periodicals, and electronic resources.
